Richard Karl Heinrich Schröder , also: Richard Carl / Karl Heinrich Schroeder (born June 19, 1838 in Treptow an der Tollense , † January 3, 1917 in Heidelberg ), was a German legal scholar and legal historian.

Life

Richard Schröder was born in the small town of Treptow a. Great. (today: Altentreptow ) born as the son of the lawyer Ludwig Schröder (1802–1869) and his wife Ida Eleonora, geb. Kölling (1804–1864), the daughter of an innkeeper from Neubrandenburg . The father was the conductor of the regional and municipal court as well as the district judiciary, later a lawyer in Treptow an der Tollense, where he was close friends with Fritz Reuter . Richard himself, who appears frequently in Reuter's letters, was one of Reuter's students.

He studied law and German linguistics at the universities in Göttingen and Berlin. During his studies in Göttingen he became a member of the Brunsviga fraternity in 1861 . After obtaining his doctorate, he temporarily worked as an auscultator , but soon retired from the Prussian civil service in order to devote himself to an academic career. He completed his habilitation in Bonn in 1863 , where he became associate professor in 1866 and full professor in 1870. In 1873 he went to Würzburg as full professor , in 1882 to Strasbourg , in 1885 to Göttingen and in 1888 as successor to Gierke to Heidelberg . In 1877 he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1900 he was elected a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . Since 1909 he was a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .

Little is known about Schröder's family circumstances. In 1884 his first wife, Anna, geb. Hugo. In 1895 he married Frieda, b. Forster, widow of the Szczecin bookseller Paul Julius Saunier . The first marriage resulted in three sons and three daughters.

His main work is the German legal dictionary (dictionary of the older German legal language).
