Richard Trimborn (born June 3, 1932 ; † October 6, 2017 in Munich ) was a German music teacher, pianist and opera director.

biography

Richard Trimborn studied composition, church music, conducting and organ in Düsseldorf. He began as a répétiteur at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf , then he became a director of studies at the Kiel Opera House , and finally in 1983 in Munich and Bayreuth .

He worked as a "gray eminence" in many important opera houses and music festivals. Conductors such as Karl Böhm , Lorin Maazel , Claudio Abbado , Wolfgang Sawallisch , Daniel Barenboim , Zubin Mehta , Pavel Baleff , Constantin Trinks and others relied on his preparatory work with the singers, in particular with regard to phrasing , correct pronunciation and intellectual penetration of a part . He made significant contributions to the preparation of world premieres , such as Penderecki's Ubu Rex or Henze's Prince of Homburg .

Trimborn was an authority on numerous productions of Wagner operas and in many cases played a decisive role in the success of well-known Wagner singers. For years he was the director of studies at the Bayreuth Festival and the Munich State Opera , but always referred to himself modestly as a répétiteur.
