Richard "Richie" Hayward (* 6. February 1946 in Ames , Iowa ; † 12. August 2010 ) was an American rock - drummer who primarily as a long-term member of the rock band Little Feat was known.

Live and act

Hayward's music career began in 1967 with the group 'The Factory' (with Lowell George ), followed by the Fraternity of Man in 1968 , with whom he recorded two albums. In 1969 he left the band again to form Little Feat with Lowell George, Roy Estrada and Bill Payne . Hayward played on all of the band's albums until Little Feat's dissolution in 1979 and worked as a studio musician, among others for Joan Armatrading , Kim Carnes , John Cale , Ry Cooder , James Cotton , The Doobie Brothers , Peter Frampton , Arlo Guthrie , Robert Palmer , Van Dyke Parks , Carly Simon , Stephen Stills and Barbra Streisand .

He also continued his work as a session musician in the 1980s, now for artists such as Nils Lofgren , Robert Plant , Tom Waits and Warren Zevon . In 1988 Little Feat started a reunion in which Hayward was there again. Guest appearances followed in the 1990s on productions by Eric Clapton , Shawn Colvin , Buddy Guy , Johnny Hallyday , Howard Jones , Bob Seger and Taj Mahal . Hayward remained a popular session drummer in the 21st century. He died at the age of 64 from complications from liver cancer.

In 2016 Rolling Stone listed him 56th of the 100 best drummers of all time .
