history

The foundation stone for the building was laid in 1969. After two and a half years of construction and costs of 24 million US dollars , the arena opened on August 21, 1971. The architectural group Vincent G. Kling and Partners designed and planned the building. The multi-purpose hall is used for sports competitions in basketball , indoor soccer , athletics and ice hockey as well as concert events.

Several teams from different sports were based in the hall. The Arena Racing USA , a stock car event, has been held in the hall since 2002 . Other sports teams that have worked in the arena were Virginia Squires (1971–1976), Richmond Robins (1971–1976), VCU Rams (1971–1999), Richmond Spiders (1971–1972), Richmond Rifles (1979–1981), Richmond Renegades (1990-2003), Richmond Speed (2000-2003), Richmond RiverDogs (2003-2006), Richmond Bandits (2005-2006), Richmond Renegades (2006-2009) and the Richmond Raiders (2010-2015).
