action

Alex, who lost his father some time ago, is taken to a summer camp in the Stanislaus National Forest by his mother so that he can get other thoughts. At the same time, the eccentric Dariush and the mysterious ZhenZhen arrive at the camp. The latter entered the United States illegally from China at her own expense after finding a flyer from the camp. On an excursion, the three get into an argument and meet Gabriel, who is about the same age, who is hiding from the law in the forest. When they want to go back to camp, they discover that all adults and all children have been evacuated. An alien invasion has begun.

On their search for survivors, they come across a flight capsule. A surviving pilot gives them a key that they urgently need to take to a NASA branch in Pasadena . Along the way, they need to overcome their fears and work together as a team. They are followed by an alien and his lizard-like dog. Both cannot be killed. On their escape, they meet a number of adults who, however, do not help them, but rather pose additional threats. Such a gang of criminals who want to keep the key to themselves and soldiers who can't even save themselves.

When they arrived at the NASA branch, they found that there were no more survivors there. However, via a video connection, they receive instructions on how to use the key from a remote base. So they can activate a nuclear missile system from the Cold War and destroy the alien mothership . The world is saved.

background

Screenwriter Zack Stentz wrote his screenplay from 2016 as a throwback to the adventure films of the 1980s. He was inspired, for example, by Stand by Me - The Secret of a Summer (1986), The Goonies (1985) and Explorers - A Fantastic Adventure (1985). McG also took these inspirations for his direction. Some film sets were used, such as Courthouse Square from Back to the Future and the Sepulveda Dam , which was used in both The Rattlesnake (1981) and Buckaroo Banzai - The 8th Dimension (1984).

When Stentz had finished about two-thirds of the script, the streaming platform Netflix landed an unexpected hit with the series Stranger Things . When the script was finished, Stentz offered it to McG's production company, who signed a deal with Netflix in 2018. On a much smaller budget than is common for science fiction films in this category, the film was completed in a 40-day shoot at Twin Lakes in Mammoth Lakes and Convict Lake in Mono County .

The film was released on May 24, 2019 on Netflix.

reception

The film was generally rated as moderate to poor. Oliver Armknecht awarded three stars on Film-rezensions.de and summed up: “ The result is not a catastrophe, it may be enough to keep 10-year-olds busy . Compared to See You Yesterday , published a week earlier , which also combines science fiction with youth drama, this is a few quality levels below. "

Sebastian Daniels von Quadratauge sees it similarly: “ The surprisingly permanent humor takes the tension out of the plot, while the essentially serious story slows down the film's wit. (…) Tip: Lean back, switch off your mind for 100 minutes and always remember - this film is not the end of the world. "
