Road traffic in Hamburg

Ring 2 describes a city street in Hamburg that leads in a semicircle north of the Elbe around the city center. It lies between the inner ring 1 and the outer ring 3 . Accordingly, the ring 2 was also referred to as the middle ring .

course

The street begins in the direct vicinity of the Elbe with the street Pepermölenbek in the Altona-Altstadt district . From the Nobistor , which follows shortly thereafter , it has four lanes and leads through the densely populated districts of Eimsbüttel , Hoheluft ( west and east ) and Eppendorf in a northeastern direction. Between Fruchtallee and Tarpenbekstraße, the ring is part of federal highway 5 and then to Deelböge of federal highway 433 . The street has its apex in Winterhude and from then on leads south-east. In doing so, it crosses other residential areas with Barmbek , Dulsberg , Wandsbek and Horn . At the Horner Rampe, Ring 2 finally reaches the Billbrook district , which is mainly occupied by commercial space , which it crosses to its end at the Moorfleet driveway of the A1 motorway .

State of development and original plans

Signs for Ring 2 in Hamburg
On the Barmbeker Ring Bridge from 1970, Ring 2 crosses Fuhlsbüttler Strasse
On the Jahnbrücke, Ring 2 should cross the discarded Autobahn-Osttangente

Since the 1970s, Ring 2 has combined various city streets, which were developed into a high-performance car-road connection to bypass the city center in the post-war period. In some cases there were no roads that could be upgraded along the planned route. In these cases, the existing buildings for Ring 2 were demolished and a new, so-called “breakthrough road” was created. Among other things, this happened in the 1960s in Eimsbüttel, where a lane was torn between Alsenplatz and Fruchtallee for the Doormannsweg.

The expansion of Ring 2 today usually includes at least four lanes plus turning lanes in a straight line. Ring 2 only has crossings that are free of height in exceptional cases and cannot be built on. At junctions that are not controlled by traffic lights, it is the right of way.

Ring 2 crosses Fuhlsbüttler Strasse in Barmbek at no height . For this purpose, the approximately 200-meter-long, four-lane Barmbeker Ring Bridge was built from 1970.

On the Jahnbrücke , about one kilometer further west, Ring 2 crosses a green corridor . In the post-war period, the construction of an urban motorway , the so-called Osttangente as an extension of today's A 25 , was planned on this area in a north-south direction . The bridge was already erected as a storage structure, the motorway planning was ultimately never implemented. The Osttangente would have run parallel to Ring 2 from the Jahnring bridge to Horn at a distance of 1–2 kilometers.

At the Rosenbrook / Deelböge intersection, a bridge was planned for the Rosenbrook-Alsterkrugchaussee over the Deelböge at the end of the 1960s, "if there was a further significant increase in traffic". In anticipation of this, the two directional lanes have been pulled apart by about 35 meters in order to have enough space for the planned expansion.

Bicycle traffic

Poor cycle path on Ring 2

As a rule, separate cycle paths are laid out along Ring 2. The condition is described in many places as "pathetic" or "catastrophic" because they are bumpy, too narrow and sometimes overgrown.

Traffic load

In 2013, at least 27,000 vehicles per working day (DTVw) were determined along the level on Ring 2. The most heavily used section is on Rosenbrook with 65,000 vehicles, followed by Jahnring with 61,000 vehicles per working day. In the Eppendorf-Winterhude-Barmbek-Dulsberg area, over 40,000 vehicles drive on Ring 2 per working day at all levels, around 4 to 5 percent of which are heavy traffic . The proportion of heavy traffic is significantly higher south of Wandsbek. 29,000 vehicles use the Horner Rampe, 14 percent of them heavy traffic; Finally, at the southeast end of Ring 2, 23 percent of the 39,000 weekday vehicles are in this category.

Environmental impact

Habichtstrasse air measuring station

The large number of cars driving on Ring 2 every day leads to significant noise pollution . In large sections, an average road noise level of over 75 dBA during the day is assumed. The nocturnal level reaches over 70 dBA in places, even in sections with apartments. According to the Hamburg Noise Action Plan 2013, parts of Ring 2 are among the 40 loudest streets in Hamburg, namely Holstenstraße, Gärtnerstraße, Tarpenbekstraße, Braamkamp, Nordschleswiger Straße, Rennbahnstraße and Horner Rampe.

A station of the Hamburg air measurement network is located on Habichtstraße in Barmbek directly on Ring 2, which crosses a residential area here. The values determined have exceeded the EU annual limit values for pollution with nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) for a long time. In contrast to the other measuring locations in Hamburg, the pollution increased by around 5 percent between 2010 and 2015; In 2015 the station measured the highest NO 2 pollution in Hamburg with an average of 63 µg / m³ . The concentrations of fine dust (PM10) measured on the Habichtstrasse also exceed the daily limit of 50 µg / m³ air several times a year, for example on 16 days in 2015.
