Rio I. is the first solo album by Rio Reiser . It was released in 1986 by the record company CBS .

History of origin

In 1984 Rio Reiser wanted to borrow DM 10,000  from producer Annette Humpe . This refused, but got an advance payment of 5,000 DM for the solo single Dr. Summer / B-side from the major label WEA . This was Rio Reiser's first solo release.

Until now, Ton Steine Schherd has always published their records through self-distribution. After a collaboration with the music industry failed, the band broke up in May 1985, heavily in debt. However, it also left a stack of demo tapes . Four of them had been offered to various record companies for a possible new LP: Alles Lie , Junimond , Lass mich los und Runter zum Hafen (the latter was later re-recorded for the second LP Blinder Passenger ).

On the basis of this and other material, Rio Reiser's first solo album was recorded in Berlin in 1985/1986, produced by Humpe and Udo Arndt . The musical playback was largely recorded by some of the most renowned German studio musicians at the time , including Curt Cress , Ken Taylor and Peter Weihe . In contrast to earlier recordings with the shards , which were characterized by a “collectivist” way of working and where Reiser contributed guitar and piano, among other things, Reiser concentrated here on the compositions and the singing. A development that was already apparent on the last album of the shards ( Shards , 1983).

The result is, especially in terms of sound, a clear departure from the underground awareness of earlier days. The success of the album, both in the charts and on the radio (where the pieces were mostly not played) can be attributed to both the successful production and the strong song material. The album yielded a number of Reiser's biggest hits and best known songs: King of Germany , was already ten years been previously played by the shards, all lie and later, among others, real and Jan Delay gecoverten Junimond and Forever and you .

Some of the early Schherd fans turned away from Reiser and accused him of “selling out” in view of the collaboration with the music industry and the supposedly smooth production. Reiser commented succinctly: there are “worse things than being an art whore”. It was important to him that the band was no longer in debt.

Reviews

“What gives this record its sizzling tension is the conscious selection of the musicians. For some titles, professionals from such different camps as the Peter Maffay Band and the avant-garde combo ' Einstürzende Neubauten ' met in the studio. But also in terms of text, Rio is much more conciliatory today. (...) The political texts of the former anarcho rocker have also been given a different color. While it used to be rude, dogmatic battle slogans, today he understands fine, but always biting irony. ” Der Spiegel 1986

" Rio I. contains the most beautiful invitation to criminal acts." Emma (9/86) on Let's do this thing

Trivia
