Riscle is a village and a former French commune with 1,775 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Gers department in the Occitanie region . It belonged to the arrondissement of Mirande and the canton of Adour-Gersoise .

With effect from January 1, 2019, the former municipalities of Riscle and Cannet were merged to form the Commune nouvelle Riscle of the same name and have the status of a Commune déléguée in the new municipality . The administrative headquarters are in Riscle.

location

Riscle is located on the Adour River in the Côtes de Saint-Mont wine region . The villages of Constance , Hitaous and Les Barthères belonged to the former municipality .

history

The history of Riscle begins with the construction of a church in the 9th century. The settlement around the castle then followed. In the eleventh century, the village already had five churches. In 1569 Riscle was destroyed by Henri I de Montmorency . Riscles flooded in 1737. It was not until the middle of the 19th century that the community was completely rebuilt.
