Risen 3: Titan Lords is an action role-playing game with a fantasy scenario released in August 2014 by the Essen-based development studio Piranha Bytes . Like its direct predecessor Risen 2: Dark Waters , the game was released for Windows , PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 . It is the third and probably final part of the Risen series. Piranha Bytes released the Risen 3: Titan Lords - Enhanced Edition on August 21, 2015 and with it their first game on PlayStation 4 .

action

In contrast to the predecessors Risen and Risen 2: Dark Waters , a new protagonist appears in the game. He is the son of Captain Stahlbart and brother of his daughter Patty , two characters who were already seen in the predecessors.

At the beginning of the game, the protagonist is robbed of the cowardice of his soul by the shadow lord during a risky treasure hunt with his sister Patty . Found dead by his companion and buried, he survives only through the healing arts of the voodoo doctor Bones . However, the healing arts are not enough to make him completely healthy. That's why he and Bones go on a search for a ritual for his full recovery. He learns that during his absence the world has been forced into a war with the Shadow , a previously unrecognized power.

He is now in contact with the three major factions in the world. He will join one of them in the course of the game. The aim is to support and unite them in their fight against the shadows and finally to regain their soul.

Factions

Similar to most of the games by Piranha Bytes, there are several factions in Risen 3 that the player can join. The Guild of Guardians acts as the bodyguard of the mages on Taranis . A member of this faction benefits from their masters' knowledge of crystal magic. The demon hunters are an ancient cult that was almost forgotten until recently it was renewed under the leadership of a druid . In addition to heavy armor and melee weapons, a demon hunter also uses conjuring spells that are cast using runes . A special feature is the ability to teleport. The voodoo pirates are the only ones who have access to the voodoo spells of the native tribe on Kila. They appear to be less tightly organized in comparison with the other groups.

Game world

The game world is based on that of the predecessor, some island landscapes known from Risen 2 can be visited again. You can travel to seven separate islands and two mainland sections.

The player starts his round trip on the Crab Coast . The place Antigua is the home of the pirates. A former pirate captain, Admiral Alvarez , is in charge there. The island of thieves is populated by thieving gnomes who are haunted by a goblin invasion. A tribe of natives can be found in the densely overgrown interior of the coast of Kila . A pirate ship has set up camp there around a stranded ship. The fog island is now uninhabited. An Inquisition expedition team ended up there. In the mountains of the island of Taranis is the headquarters of the magicians. The island is rich in mineral resources, especially magic crystals. Another island is the skull island . It is inhospitable land, shaped by lava flows and rubble. Here it comes to a decisive battle between the protagonist and the boss Nekroloth . On Calador there is an impressive citadel, which has been the headquarters of the Demon Hunters Guild for a long time. The area itself is rough, but rich in iron ore. Another widely uninhabited area is Takarigua . The Inquisition used to grow sugar cane here . Today the only remaining settlement, Puerto Sacarico, has only a few residents.

Gameplay

The protagonist is steered through the game world from the third person perspective using a keyboard and mouse or gamepad. Either a mini map or a compass can be used for orientation .

Character development

By solving tasks, e.g. B. completing a quest or killing enemies gives the player fame points. These can then be used to increase character values or to learn new skills. In addition to fighting talent, investments can be made in alchemy , thief and blacksmith skills .

So-called "legendary items" can be collected in order to further increase the skills. These are distributed all over the game world without any prior information about their exact location. So they are difficult to get hold of.

struggle

The protagonist can be equipped with various weapons . Besides freely available at dealers swords , slashing - and stabbing weapons , crossbows , shotguns and muskets , there are fractional-related schools of magic that can be permanently overcome only with membership of each guild. The technical development of weapons is at the level of the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance.

Members of the Guardian community have access to classic attack spells such as "rain of fire" and "targeted lightning strikes". The focus of the demon hunters is on support especially conjuring magic. Pirates use the voodoo magic of a native tribe, with the help of which they can draw life energy from other characters in the game or take it over entirely using self-made dolls.

Extensions and collector's editions

For Risen 3 , three extensions were offered as downloadable content in 2014 : adventure equipment , the fog island and goblin plague .

All three expansions were included in the so-called First Edition in Germany when the game was released . In addition, two collector editions were offered: The Collector's Edition and the limited Shadow Lord Edition .

The physical versions of the PC version were DRM- free, but a download version was also released on Steam .

Reviews

The international average ratings of the game were subdued to negative, with significant differences in rating between the Windows and console versions. The PC version received 65 out of 100 points on Metacritic . The version for Xbox 360 is listed with a rating of 44 points, while the PlayStation 3 version has 36 points.

Above all, the game's story and the poor entry point are criticized.

According to the specialist magazine GameStar , on the other hand, the atmosphere is excellent and the initially weak combat system triumphs at the back as the game length and skills increase.

"Risen 3 could have been a masterpiece - but it" only "turned out to be a good role-playing game with a mighty scope."

- Benjamin Danneberg : GameStar

The PC Games , according to the game is more elaborate than its predecessor. But it is still struggling with contaminated sites and the presentation is no longer up-to-date. The author of the test likes the mixture of fantasy and pirate setting, but he also notes that not everyone might like it and that after Risen 2 many fans would have wished for a complete departure from the pirate setting.

"A huge Gothic and Caribbean game world for explorers, magicians and pirates."

- Stefan Weiß : PC Games

In the test of the online magazine 4Players , the game design is criticized as inconsistent. Buying the Xbox 360 and PS3 version is not recommended due to inadequate technology. While the quests are diverse and the scenery is idyllic, the main thing is that there is a lack of a good story and the start is embarrassing.

If you go to GIGA after the review , however, first impressions are worthless, especially with role-playing games, even if they are difficult to get rid of. According to the author, the story never pushes itself into the foreground and likes to disappear behind countless side tasks and other pleasant distractions from which the world is "crammed full". Even if the story is not necessarily the greatest strength, the presentation is appealing and exploring the islands is a real pleasure.

"No matter how your relationship to the series has been so far: Risen 3 deserves every chance you can give him."

- Leo Schmidt : GIGA

Spiegel Online speaks of the "appeal of always the same", since the developer studio Piranha Bytes has been making similar games for years, but that's exactly what the fans want and Risen 3 is a good role-playing game.

Awards

Risen 3 was declared the winner in the category “Best Roleplaying Game” at Gamescom 2014.

Trivia

Graphics from the game were used in the movie Offline - Life Is Not a Bonus Level (2017).
