background

Tsai Ming-liang (2013)

For Tsai Ming-liang, Rizi is the first feature film since Jiaoyou / Stray Dogs (2013). In between, he had devoted himself to short films, documentaries and a VR project. The shooting of Rizi dates back to 2014 and numerous film clips were created within the project. He cast the leading roles with his regular actor Lee Kang-sheng , with whom he has worked for more than three decades, as well as the film debutant Anong Houngheuangsy from Laos , whom Tsai discovered by chance on the streets of Bangkok . Tsai said that his eleventh feature film was a "godsend" because Lee fell ill during the course of the project and he didn't follow a plan, idea or script. The shooting dragged on with interruptions for four years. The director came across Anong by chance while he was cooking food in a modest house.

In Rizi is a handmade low-budget film, as Tsai was tired from the established studio system. The more people make films, the smaller his projects have become, but in return he is free to decide: “I am filming life now. Anong's day is my day, ”said Tsai. The director raised public funds to complete the film, which also required a long editing process. He announced the film in 2019 at the 76th Venice International Film Festival .
