Robert Marshall (Bishop)

Robert William Marshall (born June 17, 1959 in Memphis , Tennessee ) is an American Roman Catholic clergyman and Bishop of Alexandria .

Life

Robert Marshall studied history at Christian Brothers University in Memphis and then law at the Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis , where he received his doctorate in 1983 . He worked as a lawyer for a few years before entering the seminary in 1995 . On June 10, 2000, he received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Memphis through Bishop James Terry Steib SVD .

After his ordination he worked in various parishes in the diocese of Memphis in pastoral care. He was also the episcopal ceremonial of Bishop Steib. Since 2017 he was pastor of Memphis Cathedral . From 2018 to 2019 he was the representative of the Apostolic Administrator during the Sedis vacancy . The new Bishop of Memphis, David P. Talley , appointed him Vicar General in March 2019 . He was also a member of the college of consultors and the priestly council of the diocese as well as the personnel commission for clergy.

Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Alexandria on April 21, 2020. Due to the restriction on participation due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the date for the episcopal ordination donated to him by the Archbishop of New Orleans , Gregory Aymond , on August 20 of the same year in the Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier in Alexandria was initially left open . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Memphis, his predecessor David P. Talley , and the Bishop Emeritus of Memphis, James Terry Steib SVD.
