Robert Paynter
Robert William Paynter (born March 12, 1928 in London , England , † October 20, 2010 on the Isle of Wight ) was a British cameraman .
Life
Robert Paynter attended Mercers' School in Holborn and was evacuated to Horsham during World War II . In 1943 he began his professional career as a camera assistant at the MOI (Ministry of Information) Colonial Film Unit. In the early 1950s he received training as a cameraman at British Transport Films . He learned his trade with David Watkin and Billy Williams , among others, and then made various short and documentary films . During this time he was frequently in Africa and was among other things personal cameraman Haile Selassies . In the 1960s, he mainly worked for the TV station ITV and shot commercials for Kellogg’s , Mars and Guinness , among others .
Paynter's film career began in 1969 with Michael Winner's war film Hannibal Brooks . Both worked together on a total of ten films, including the Western Lawman and Chatos Land and the Raymond Chandler film adaptation Dead Sleep Better With Robert Mitchum than Philip Marlowe . Between 1981 and 1986 years Paynter worked with the director John Landis . In addition to feature films American Werewolf in London , Trading Places , Into the Night , and Spies Like Us , he also led the camera at Landis' 13-minute Michael Jackson - music video Thriller . Landis also gave Paynter cameo appearances in some of his films; most recently in the comedy Burke & Hare with Simon Pegg and Tim Curry . In the 1980s he also photographed Richard Lester's Superman films Superman II - Alone Against All and Superman III - The Steel Lightning . Paynter also made his last recordings for Lester in 1991 - he led one of the cameras in the concert film Get Back about Paul McCartney's 1990 world tour .
Paynter was married to Marjorie Dawson from 1950 until her death in 2001; the marriage had three children.
