Roberto Octavio González Nieves OFM (born June 2, 1950 in Elizabeth ) is an American Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico .

Life

Roberto Octavio González Nieves joined the religious order of the Franciscans and made his profession on August 25, 1973. The former Bishop of San Miguel , Lorenzo Michele Joseph Graziano, OFM, ordained him on May 8, 1977 as a priest .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Boston and titular bishop of Ursona on July 19, 1988 . He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Boston, Bernard Francis Cardinal Law , on October 3 of the same year; Co- consecrators were Cardinal John Joseph O'Connor , Archbishop of New York , and Cardinal Luis Aponte Martínez , Archbishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico.

Roberto González Nieves was appointed coadjutor bishop of Corpus Christi on May 16, 1995, and was introduced to office on June 26 of the same year. After René Henry Gracida's resignation , he succeeded him on April 1, 1997 as Bishop of Corpus Christi. Until 1999 he was chairman of the Bishops' Committee on the Church in Latin America of the US National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB).

Roberto González Nieves was named Archbishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico on March 26, 1999 and was introduced to office on May 8 of the same year. From 1999 to 2003 he was a member of the board of the Latin American Bishops' Council (CELAM) and was chairman of its finance council ( Comité Económico ).

Motto

Roberto González chose Nieves Vita per Jesum ( Latin a life for Jesus ) as the episcopal motto .
