Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978 is a box set by the American band Grateful Dead , consisting of two CDs and a DVD as well as a bonus CD for pre-orderers.

Rocking the Cradle: Egypt 1978

From September 14-16, 1978, the Grateful Deads gave a three-day concert at the Gizah Sound and Light Theater in Giza in front of the Giza Pyramids and near the Great Sphinx of Giza . This idea - born out of a joke - found the support of Jehan Sadat , the former First Lady of Egypt and wife of Anwar as-Sadat , as well as the American Broadcasting Company . On September 16, the band also played during a total lunar eclipse .

From this three-day concert material from September 15th and 16th was used. Many recordings were used for both the double CD and the concert DVD. In addition to these recordings, an 8 mm film called "The Vacation Tapes" was used on the DVD, parts of the stage set as well as vacation recordings of the band members together with family and friends were filmed. There was also a bonus CD (with further recordings of the show) for those who had pre-ordered the CD / DVD box on the Grateful Dead homepage (dead.net).

The sound was recorded on a 24-track recorder during the shows , as they actually wanted to produce a live album of the event back then, also to recoup the cost of the concert. The recordings of the first evening as well as parts of the second evening turned out to be unusable due to technical problems. Since the concert took place during the production of the album " Shakedown Street ", which was specially interrupted for this purpose, it was also more important for the band that "Shakedown Street" was completed first, and the next step was a promotional tour through the USA for the album. so that in the end the idea of the live album was shelved.

It was only after almost 30 years that the band returned to the recordings made at the time and commissioned their sound engineer Jeffrey Norman and their music archivist David Lemieux to sift through the material and determine whether it could be used. The album was then released for the event's 30th anniversary.

Chart success

In the Billboard charts , the album reached number 35 on both the Top Internet Albums and The Billboard 200 .

Recording dates

Track 1 and 6 of the first CD are from September 15th, all other recordings on the first and second CD and the DVD are from September 16th. The first four recordings of the bonus CD are from September 16, the remaining four from September 15.
