occupation

Rodeo in the sky - research for more flight safety is a German documentary film from the Berlin-Brandenburg broadcasting company from 2003.

The film documents the exploration of atmospheric gravity waves (mountain waves) and the effect of turbulence on aviation. The pilots of the Mountain Wave Project will be accompanied on gliding expeditions in high mountain regions of the Andes, Alps and Pyrenees, as well as the support of the project by aerospace pioneers.

action

The article documents the fascination of gliding . This air sport is practiced on the basis of the optimal use of different types of updraft . This fact is explained in a short historical outline at the beginning of the film. Starting with the first thermal cross-country flights at the Rhön competitions over the Wasserkuppe in the twentieth century, flights in thunderclouds up to high altitude record flights over the Alps. However, the focus is on the updrafts caused by waves in the lee of mountain ranges with their turbulent whirlwinds, the rotors and the unusual-looking lenticular clouds Moazagotl .

Aviation pioneer and record pilot Joachim P. Kuettner describes his wave flying adventures in this type of updraft, which he had scientifically researched for the first time in Silesia in the 1930s. The background of a crash caused by strong turbulence in the Monster Rotor during the Sierra Wave Project is reported and current research results (simulation of the rotor types) of the National Center for Atmospheric Research are presented. Then the bow is made to the wave flight pioneers of the new generation. The members of the Mountain Wave Project (MWP) are not only chasing after the Küttner 2000 km long-distance flight record price , but also want to contribute to increasing flight safety with their diverse research on air turbulence .

The first stations of the MWP's aviation expedition to the Argentine Andes are the preparation of the Stemme S10 VT research aircraft in Strausberg near Berlin, the altitude-physiological preparation of the flights at DLR with expert advice from the astronaut Ulf Merbold . A ride by the MWP pilots in the negative pressure chamber up to 10,000 m and a demonstration of the oxygen deficiency symptoms are demonstrated in this context. This is followed by aerial photos from the Andean expedition, which allow glimpses from the glider cockpit into active volcanoes, as well as a record flight in stormy winds in mountain waves on December 16, 1999 of over 1,550 km over the Strait of Magellan to Rio Grande on Tierra del Fuego . The importance of MWP turbulence research for military and civil aviation is explained at the Hindu Kush locations in Afghanistan, the Pyrenees and at the Lufthansa commercial aviation school. Flight incidents and evidence of crashes prove the importance of developing new forecasting methods for the rare weather phenomenon. The conclusion of the film allows a preview of the visions of the MWP team, shot at the German Aerospace Center in Cologne. The research of the high waves in the stratosphere , examinations and measurements of mother-of-pearl clouds in a high altitude glider flown by pilots in astronaut suits are the future tasks for the MWP team.

rating

The film is shaped by the protagonist Rene Heise, who initiated a scientific documentary about lee waves at the RBB , accompanied it professionally and, thanks to his connection to aerospace, organized it in various phases as well as the unusual flight experiences of the glider world record pilot Klaus Ohlmann. The authors of this documentation have succeeded in bringing the viewer closer to the viewer in the form of a scientific documentation of complex contents of an atmospheric phenomenon, which succeeds thanks to the commitment of the dubbing and radio play speaker Joachim Kerzel and the integration of graphics.

The documentary was broadcast several times in Germany (RBB, Phoenix ) on Deutsche Welle abroad and on Chinese state television. A short article was shown in the RBB science magazine OZON on September 24, 2003, the follow-up article "Sierra Nevada - air vortices endanger flight safety" on May 24, 2006 at the RBB.

Awards

In 2004 the scientific documentation was nominated for the Ludwig Bölkow Journalist Prize .
