Roger Grasset

Roger "Toto" Grasset (* around 1910 , † after 1950 ) was a French swing jazz musician ( double bass , tuba ) who is remembered primarily for his collaboration with Django Reinhardt .

Grasset was tuba player with Ray Ventura et ses Collegiens in 1929 , to which u. a. and Gaston Lapeyronnie , Danny Polo and Paul Misraki belonged ( "I'm Afraid of You", Columbia). In the early 30s he switched to the double bass and then played with Grégor et ses Grégoriens and the Chicago Syncopators with Guy Paquinet and Michel Warlop ("My Gal Sal"). From 1934 he was a member of Michel Warlop's orchestra, with whom he accompanied the singer Germaine Sablon ("La chanson du large"). In 1935 he also accompanied the young vocalist Le Petit Mirsha in the Michel Warlop Orchestra on songs such as “Petit homme, c'est l'heure de faire dodo” or “Maman, ne vends pas la maison!”. Grasset also belonged to the Ensemble Le Jazz du Poste Parisien , in which Warlop and Paquinet a. a. Also Alex Renard , Henry Arnold , Serge Glykson , Alix Combelle and Stéphane Grappelli played.

In the second half of the 1930s, Grasset et al. a. at Wal-Berg ("You are beautiful with me"). In April 1938 at the latest he replaced Louis Vola in the Quintette du Hot Club de France ("J'attendrai", 1938) and also took part in his 1938 session with Larry Adler (" I Got Rhythm ", " Body and Soul "). In the summer of 1938 was with Django Reinhardt in Great Britain (recordings with Decca). Grasset can be heard on the tracks "Swing from Paris" and "The Flat Foot Floogie" (Decca). In mid-1938 he recorded with Eddie Brunner for Swing ("In a Little Spanish Town", with Bill Coleman , Alix Combelle, Noël Chiboust , Herman Chittison , Oscar Alemán , Tommy Benford ).

In April 1943, Grasset played with Dany Kane et son ensemble (" St. Louis Blues ", with Pierre Delhoumeau , Yvonne Blanc , Sarane Ferret , Jerry Mengo ); In 1946, Grasset was involved in jam sessions with Lucien Philip , Harry Perret , Léo Chauliac , Henri Crolla , Alex Renard, Arthur Motta and Emmanuel Soudieux ; In 1946/47 recordings were made with Sarane Ferret, in 1949 with Jerry Mengo and in July 1950 with Don Byas (“ Summertime ”, with Art Simmons , Jean-Jacques Tilché and Claude Marty ). In the field of jazz he was involved in 46 recording sessions between 1929 and 1950.
