The interior of the church

Rohrbach an der Teich was an independent municipality in Burgenland in Austria until 1971 . Today it is a district of Mischendorf .

The Teichbach , a right-hand tributary to the Pinka, flows through Rohrbach an der Teich . It is also known as the pond .

The Catholic branch church Ascension was built in 1827 and has a high altar in neo-Gothic style, it is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The area around Rohrbach was already populated in prehistoric times. This is evidenced by several burial mounds from Roman times, which however were destroyed. The first documentary mention was made in 1496 under the Hungarian name "Neudorf". Croatian settlers came to the place in the 16th century.

At that time Rohrbach belonged to the Rotenturm dominion. According to oral tradition, the people had to bring sour water to Count Erdödy in Rotenturm. The source is no longer known, but in Brunngraben suspected; but it could also have been in Hochholz 11 .

In the course of a church visitation, the name Rohrbach was used as early as 1697 . The church was built in 1827, and this Ascension Day was consecrated in 1836 .

As early as 1870 to 1880 Rohrbach owned a kind of "water pipe". By means of a 32 meter high wind well, water was fed into a reservoir, from which the population took their drinking water. In 1949 the wind well overturned and was destroyed in the process.

A school has existed in Rohrbach since 1860. After teaching in two classes from 1911, a new building was built in 1912.

In a fire in 1890, a total of 20 thatched houses were destroyed; a hard blow to the already impoverished population. Numerous Rohrbach men then tried their luck in America. Thanks to their diligence, they achieved modest prosperity. The majority stayed in America and later had women and children join them, but subsequently showed their attachment to their home village. With their donations the altar, the bell, the organ and a monstrance for the churches were procured. The cross erected on the village square in 1906 was also initiated by emigrants. Few returned and bought an economy.

In the last days of the Second World War , Rohrbach was not spared from the chaos of the war, as the school's chronicle shows. In April 1945 a German rearguard and a Soviet vanguard clashed in Rohrbach, whereupon bitter fighting ensued. The German units belonged to the 1st People's Mountain Division . The Soviet attackers were part of the 26th Army, which occupied the entire Oberwart district in the first two weeks of April.

In terms of school, Rohrbach belongs to the Kohfidisch secondary school, just like all the communities in the Teichbachtal. The old elementary school, as well as the wooden fire tower, were being demolished. The existing kindergarten had to be closed in 2001 due to lack of demand.

As part of the implementation of the community structure Improvement Act 1971, the communities were Mischendorf , Kotezicken , Kleinbachselten , Großbach Rarely , Rohrbach merged at the pond and the greater community Neuhaus Mischendorf.
