Names

In Hindi / Urdu , the Rohu is called Rehu, similar to Rawas, the Indian salmon. In Oriya it is called Rohi, Rui in Bengali , Rou in Assamese and Sylheti, and again Rohu in Malayalam.

description

The Rohu has a dorsal fin with 12 to 14 branched fin rays . It has a blue-green iridescent color with reddish colors on the flanks. The Rohu can be a maximum of two meters long and weigh 45 kilograms. The official IGFA world record is only 5.70 kilograms from Kaempeng Sen in Thailand. A 15 kilogram and 92 centimeter long specimen was caught in the Khao Laem Reservoir in Thailand, a 25 kilogram fish in the Srinakarin Reservoir and the final weight of this species is estimated at 110 kilograms.

Occurrence

The Rohu is found in many rivers and freshwater lakes in South and Southeast Asia. He also tolerates brackish water. It is particularly common in Bangladesh and the Indian states of Orissa , Assam , West Bengal , Bihar and Uttar Pradesh . It can also be found in Thailand , Myanmar , Nepal and Pakistan . It is now food fish in other Asian countries, such as Iraq .

Way of life

adult Rohu

The Rohu is herbivorous . Young fish feed mainly on zooplankton , but in the course of their development they increasingly switch to phytoplankton . The phytoplankton is filtered using its gills. Adult fish also eat aquatic plants. The Rohu shows a diurnal lifestyle and lives mainly as a loner. After two to five years, the fish is sexually mature and, at the beginning of the monsoons, prefers to spawn on flood plains of rivers. The female lays 200,000 to 2 million fish eggs. In still water it does not reproduce naturally, so that reproduction has to be artificially induced in pond management.

Use

fried rohu

The rohu is a popular food fish that grows in pond farms v. a. held in Kerala and marketed as fresh fish. The Rohu has a non-oily white meat and is considered fried by the Oriyas and Bengali as a great delicacy and starter of the typical traditional diet. It is offered as Potoler Dolma or in mustard oil as Kalia. Tok is a dish made from tamarind and rohu fillet. It also plays an important role in the cuisine of the Punjab and Lahore . The Kayastha in Uttar Pradesch even consider it holy food, which can only be eaten on certain religious occasions and ceremonies. The rohu is also a popular fishing fish.
