Roland Bässler (born April 27, 1951 in Vienna ) is an Austrian social scientist .

education

Roland Bässler spent his childhood and youth in Hauskirchen (in the Weinviertel in Lower Austria ), where he attended elementary school. From 1961 to 1970 he completed his school days in Vienna- Strebersdorf , where he graduated. In 1970, Bässler enrolled at the University of Vienna and enrolled in teaching for mathematics and physical exercise. He then also studied sociology as part of his doctorate at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Vienna. In 1980 he received his doctorate in philosophy. In the following years he worked as a university assistant at the Institute for Sports Science in Vienna (Professor Raimund Sobotka ). In 1999 he completed his habilitation at the University of Vienna in the subjects of “Empirical Social Research” and “Leisure Sociology with a Special Focus on the Sociology of Sport”. The habilitation thesis with the title “Social and personal influencing variables in sport. Empirical analyzes of the connections between society, the individual and sport “stood u. a. in the assessment by Günther Lüschen (Department of Sociology - University of Alabama at Birmingham , USA) and Walter Tokarski (Institute for Leisure Science and Rector of the German Sport University Cologne ).

Academic career

In his early academic years (up to the end of the 1990s), Bässler mainly dealt with sports-sociological and sports-pedagogical topics; In his research at this time he had exclusively turned to quantitative research, but in the course of time he took up a critical discussion on the application of quantitative versus qualitative research methods. Today he is an advocate of the mix of methods (triangulation) in the analysis of social behavior patterns and structures. This is documented in detail in his publications on scientific work on quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Since his habilitation, his specialty in research on leisure and sport has expanded to include tourism (sport / health and cultural tourism). In 2005 he was appointed professor for tourism management at the IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems . His current research interests include studies on the economic and social effects of sports and cultural events.

Today Bässler teaches at various universities (University of Salzburg, Vienna University of Economics, University of Vienna) and universities of applied sciences (St.Pölten University of Applied Sciences) in Austria.

Since the winter semester 2017/18, Bässler has been visiting professor at Danube University Krems ; From January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018, Bässler was appointed center director at the Department of Economics and Health at the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Danube University Krems. The Center for Business Psychology, Social and Leisure Economics, which he heads, includes the academic studies Tourism, Wellness and Event Management (MBA), Sport and Event Management (MBA), Business and Organizational Psychology (MA), Social Management (MSc) and Social Work (MSc).

As a project manager, he initiated and led an Austrian team from 1997 to 2000 in the creation of a master plan for the Yabuli ski resort in northern China and the Songhua River Vacation Resort planning in Harbin ( Heilongjiang Province , China ). In 2000, Bässler was a member of a WTO consulting team for the creation of a tourism master plan for the Shandong Province in China.

Current project management activities include in particular projects for workplace health promotion.
