Rolf Hackstein

Rolf Hackstein (born June 27, 1925 in Stolberg / Rhineland ; † June 25, 2011 in Aachen ) was a German mechanical engineer and professor of ergonomics . From 1967 to 1990 he was head of the Institute for Work Science (IAW) at RWTH Aachen University and from 1966 to 1990 he was executive board member and director of FIR e. V. (then: Research Institute for Rationalization) at RWTH Aachen.

Life

Hackstein was a soldier in Italy for one year from 1943 and then for three years in French captivity. He succeeded at the Italy 1944 German High School , the Rome -leaving certificate to purchase.

From 1948 to 1952 he studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University with a focus on textile and manufacturing technology .

In 1950 he found access to the Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAW) at RWTH Aachen University as a student assistant (then: auxiliary assistant) then as a research assistant (then: scientific assistant) and worked on topics such as aptitude assessment (today: aptitude diagnostics ), personnel management , vocational training and professional education (today: work education ) , work and company organization , industrial women's work , performance studies and remuneration (today: wages ).

In 1953 he moved to the FIR as - historically speaking - the first research assistant and worked there on the investigation of rationalization possibilities in the manufacture of gears and drop forged parts . This included work in the fields of technical statistics , business accounting , manufacturing technology , productivity measurement , work and time studies and wages .

With the promotion to Dr. engineer , he moved in 1955 to the (employer) Association of textile industry Westphalia in Munster, whose managing director he was from 1959 to 1964.

In 1964 he joined the Buderus ' rule ironworks Wetzlar and got there in 1965 the function of a Director . He was in charge of human resources and work preparation and also took on other special tasks for other plants in Flick companies.

In 1966 he took over as a managing board member and director of the FIR and in 1967 was also appointed to the chair of the Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAW) at RWTH Aachen University.

In 1990 he retired and devoted himself intensively to a longstanding passion: historical research and appeared with publications on Aachen history.

Extensive REFA activities were part of his career : in 1951 he joined the association, acquired the REFA basic license in 1952 (then: REFA course for time studies and job evaluation) and then worked as a speaker in the REFA special courses for students at RWTH Aachen University. In the period from 1958 to 1960 he acquired the qualifications as a REFA teacher and then as a REFA specialist teacher. In Wetzlar he was a member of the REFA board. In Aachen he took over the chairmanship of the REFA district association from 1967 to 1981. He was a member of the REFA executive committee for the regional association Northwest from 1967 to 1972, of the entire executive committee (today: Federal Association) from 1972 to 1979.

Further activities were directed towards the Rationalization Board of German Business . V., the AIF , the USW and he was the curator of two Fraunhofer institutes .

Publications

Over 430 journal articles and a number of book publications are linked to Hackstein during the institute's time. He was a referee for 130 dissertations and co-referee for another 55. He supervised four habilitation theses and was co-referee for a further six. Over 40 of his students were appointed professors at German universities themselves.

He also worked as an advisory board member and editor of various magazines and book series.
