The Breuste monument "WIK - Fire from the Kettles", title based on the drama by Ernst Toller (1930) in the Kiel council servant garden.

In the function of a union secretary, he came to Kiel, where he was chairman of the SPD local association Gaarden-Ost for several years until 1972, when he moved from Gaarden to Kiel-Schilksee , and from 1981 to 1983 he was a member of the board of the district party. From 1970 to 1990 he was a member of the Kiel council, in which he represented the east bank constituency. In 1972 he was elected honorary city councilor for war victims and the disabled, in 1976 for international relations and contacts with the population and in 1982 as head of culture. Among other things, he was committed to establishing the cultural quarter in the Sophienhof and accommodating the Kiel children's and youth theater in the Werftpark . The creation of the "revolutionary monument " by Hans-Jürgen Breuste goes back to his initiative, which was erected in the council servant garden in 1982 after fundamental disputes over the Kiel sailors' uprising . Johann wanted to make the citizens aware of the time and a symbol with a view of the Laboe memorial He also made a substantial private investment in this property and became a co-owner.

In 1990 he left Kiel to build the postal union in the new federal states in Berlin after reunification. Today he lives in Kiel-Schilksee and Berlin . He has a son from his first marriage. He is married to the artist Tina Schwichtenberg for the second time .

Another major initiative remained unsuccessful: after long debates, the project of a comprehensive museum for industrial and everyday culture in Kiel, which had been pursued for many years mainly by Rolf Johanning and the SPD, was not implemented.

A picture by Johanning can be found in the portrait gallery of Kiel City Hall. It was painted by Peter Nagel in 1985 .

Quote

“Rolf Johanning thought and acted very politically in all of his offices. To this day he is committed to internal and external peace. For example, as a councilor, he spoke out against the building of submarines for the Pinochet regime in Chile at Kiel shipyards . "
