history

Already in the middle of the 19th century during the time of the entire Danish state , the Kiel suburb gained increasing importance due to the construction of the Kiel-Altona railway line in 1844. But it was only after the construction of the new Kiel main train station on Sophienblatt in 1899 that the need arose to redesign the surroundings of the new train station and give the traffic axis between the old town and the station district (on the border between the districts of Kieler Vorstadt and Südfriedhof ) a metropolitan and representative format to give. From 1902, the former two-story apartment buildings west of the main train station were finally torn down and several large five-story commercial and residential buildings were built instead. On the corner of Herzog-Friedrich-Straße / Sophienblatt, for example, the Sophieneck was built in 1903, which was characterized by a mixture of Art Nouveau Gothic and German Renaissance . The first Sophienhof was also built in those years.

Although the center of Kiel was badly damaged by the bombings in World War II , the Sophieneck, Sophienhof and adjacent buildings were preserved. Nevertheless, as part of the restructuring of Kiel city center in line with the concept, the car- friendly city decided to demolish the existing buildings and build a shopping center in their place. To counter the impending demolition of the building complex to protest, it came in 1980 finally to the occupation of the first apartments in Sophienhof and adjacent buildings. Nevertheless, the demolition work continued and in July 1983 the Sophienhof was finally completely demolished. The current Sophienhof shopping center was inaugurated at the same location on March 3, 1988

Events

Regular and irregular events take place in the Sophienhof, from piano concerts and a Christmas market to party events such as “Kiel's longest night”, which is always held on the night of the time change on the last Saturday in October. Furthermore, the Sophienhof offers local associations and initiatives access to an audience.

Medical center

Directly in the Sophienhof, at the corner of Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse and the corner of Sophienblatt (Herzog-Friedrich-Strasse 21), there is a medical center where many specialists - from allergists to dentists - practice.
