Ronald Chetwynd-Hayes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ronald Henry Glynn Chetwynd-Hayes (mostly R. Chetwynd-Hayes ; born May 20, 1919 in Isleworth , Middlesex ; died March 20, 2001 in Teddington , London ) was a British writer, best known as a ghost story writer and Horror stories and as editor of anthologies .

Life

He was the son of Henry Chetwynd-Hayes, a master sergeant and director of a cinema, and May Rose, née Cooper. After attending school in Hanworth and doing military service during World War II, he worked as an employee in a London furniture store until 1973.

His first novel, The Man from the Bomb , was published in 1959. It is a science fiction story about a man who survived in the center of an atomic bomb explosion . The radiation mutates his brain cells and he achieves almost divine abilities.

However, Chetwynd-Hayes did not begin to publish on a larger scale until the mid-1960s, turning to horror literature and only occasionally making detours into the border area between horror and SF, as in his anthology Tales of Terror From Outer Space (1975) or in the short story Neighbors (1973, German as The dear neighbors in the Leichenschmaus collection ). Two of his twelve novels belong to the series about the haunted house Clavering Grange .

But Chetwynd-Hayes' real profession was the short story . By 1998 he wrote over 80 short stories that appeared in 23 collections. He was also the editor of 26 anthologies, which also contained stories from him.

In 1989 he received the Bram Stoker Award for his life's work , and in the same year he received a special award at the British Fantasy Awards . His collection of stories, The Monster Club, was the model for a 1981 film by Roy Ward Baker with Vincent Price . Another film adaptation of several of Chetwynd-Hayes' short stories was From Beyond the Grave by Kevin Connor from 1974 with Peter Cushing . During the 1930s he had worked several times as an extra in film.

In 2001 he died of pneumonia at the age of 81 in a London nursing home.
