Roque Gonzales , officially Portuguese Município de Roque Gonzales , is a small Brazilian town in the northwest of the state of Rio Grande do Sul . The population was estimated as of July 1, 2019 at 6847 inhabitants, who live on a municipality area of around 349 km² and are called Roque-Gonzalenser ( roque-gonzalenses ). The place is named after the canonized Roque González de Santa Cruz . The distance to the capital Porto Alegre is 547 km.
Roque Gonzales borders the Río Uruguay and thus Argentina and the places Porto Xavier , São Paulo das Missões , São Pedro do Butiá , Rolador , São Luiz Gonzaga , Dezesseis de Novembro and Pirapó
In the first half of the 20th century, many German-Brazilians migrated from the "old colonies" to this area, while some older people still speak Riograndens Hunsrück and East Pomeranian today. Polish and Talian are also spoken . The majority of the residents have Portuguese origins and maintain the Gaúcho culture.
The original inhabitants were Mbyá-Guaraní , who came under the influence of the Jesuits in the 17th and 18th centuries . The place became independent in 1965.
Nearby attractions include the banks of the Rio Ijuí and Salto Pirapó . The biome is Mata Atlântica and Pampa .
The best-known resident is the writer Nelson Hoffmann .
