After the place had reached a population of over 500 in the middle of the 19th century, the population fell to just over 300 as a result of the phylloxera crisis by the end of the century. The mechanization of agriculture caused a further decline in the population in the first half of the 20th century; The town reached its lowest point with 159 inhabitants in 1968.
economy
The area around the village is still characterized by agriculture and forestry, with livestock (cattle and sheep) making up the majority of agricultural production. Viticulture is also practiced: Roquetaillade has a share in the Languedoc wine-growing region and is one of around 40 municipalities that are allowed to market their white sparkling wines under the designation of origin Crémant de Limoux , Blanquette de Limoux AOC or Blanquette méthode ancestrale AOC . In the village itself, small trade as well as smaller craft and service businesses predominate. At the beginning of the third millennium, a wind farm ( Parc éolien du Pic de Brau ) was installed in the municipality .
