action

Antonia Winston, a young fashion designer in London , calls her mom Helen on the family estate in Cornwall . She notices that the mother is depressed. When she asked, she said it was nothing, Antonia shouldn't worry. As soon as Antonia has hung up, her friend Peter, a young lawyer, appears with a bunch of friends attached and wants to celebrate the first criminal case he has won. There have been tensions between Antonia and Peter for a long time, which escalate into the fact that Antonia throws all the guests out of her apartment and Peter, who cheated on her, gives the ring back. Then she gets in the car and drives home. Just as she arrives, her father is being taken away in the ambulance. He had a heart attack caused by the excitement of the past few days. In fact, the situation at the family mansion is precarious and bankruptcy seems inevitable if the pending liabilities cannot be redeemed by the end of the month.

Tom Dixon, a childhood friend of Antonia and sponsored child of her father, tries to help her. Tom is a writer and has written a very successful novel. The death of his mother completely threw him off his mind, since then, as he himself notes, he has "not written a sensible sentence."

After Antonia had a detailed conversation with her mother, she went to the bank the next day to get an overview of the situation. There she learns that Harold Huston has canceled all contracts in his father's cloth factory and that they are now left with the fabrics. When Antonia comes home, David, a colleague of Peters, has arrived to bring her a few things. Antonia is quite hostile towards him. David explains to her that he is not a friend of Peters, but just happened to work in the same law firm as him. Antonia's mother Helen likes the young man from the start. Antonia has made the decision to meet with Harold Huston and David is accompanying her there. From Huston, who showed up with his little daughter Cindy, whom David looks after during the conversation, she learns that the fabrics supplied by the Winstons are simply no longer up-to-date, as the trend for bedding and curtain fabrics in go in a completely different direction. Antonia suggests switching to fabrics for dresses, as the existing patterns correspond exactly to those that are currently "in". Huston wants to give her the chance to create a collection and then decide. Since everything has to happen very quickly, Antonia also works on her collection at night, and David, who has very good ideas, supports her wherever he can. When they have finished the collection, the two of them kiss for the first time.

Antonia's father, a very energetic man, has now discharged himself from the hospital. He is concerned about what will become of his business. Antonia asks him to trust her and her ideas. The young woman was able to tell the man from the bank that she had good news because Huston had placed a large order with the cloth factory.

Nobody suspects that Tom, who goes in and out of the Winstons and enjoys their trust, is playing a wrong game. Since George does not trust his daughter to be able to save the family property, he asks Tom for help, who suggests to transfer the company to him first, as he is currently not liquid and can only help out in this way. David in turn makes the proposal to transfer part of the castle to a foundation , in return for which some rooms in the castle would have to be made available as a country hotel. George doesn't think so at all, but is changed by his wife Helen, on whose judgment he could always rely. Born out of necessity, Antonia conjured up an impromptu dress for Cindy, Huston's daughter, who fell into a well on an excursion, and then Huston commissioned a children's collection.

Tom, who sees his goals in jeopardy, tries to influence George against David, whereupon George asks him to make inquiries about the young lawyer and his foundation. Tom actually convinces George Winston that David was acting fraudulently and that he found out that David should have left the law firm because he had embezzled money from a client. When George tells his daughter about it, she gets carried away into accusing David of just using her and her family. David just replies, “If you believe that, then any further word is superfluous” and leaves.

Antonia learns from the bank clerk that it was Tom Dixon who made a lucrative offer for her father's castle. When Antonia then calls Peter who tells her the real reasons why David left, she realizes how wrong she has done him. Fortunately, Peter informs David that someone is intriguing against him and that he primarily wants to harm Antonia. Tom has meanwhile lured George into his mother's bedroom and now confronts him with the fact that he, Tom, is his son and that George is to blame for the fact that his mother was so unhappy all his life. George cannot convince the confused young man who has gotten into something that none of it is true. Tom even beats him and, when he collapses with excitement, refuses to give him his pills. When Antonia arrives, he also acts violently against her. Fortunately, David went straight after Peter's call and can help. He hits Tom and clears the situation. Tom is taken away by the police who have been called.

David can finally hand over his ring to Antonia with the words: "I knew from the beginning that we belonged together".
