The Rosella is a ferry of the Finnish shipping company Viking Line , which entered service in 1980. The ship has been in service on the Kapellskär to Mariehamn route since March 2011 and is the oldest unit in the Viking Line's fleet.

history

Planning and construction

The Rosella was commissioned together with her sister ship Turella at the end of the 1970s, as the shipping company, then still known as SF Line , owned only three ships, all of which were younger than ten years, but due to their small size not for the increasing number of passengers were suitable. The Rosella was commissioned from Wärtsilä Turku shipyard on January 18, 1979 , her sister ship in March 1978.

The Rosella was launched on August 14, 1979 . The ship was named after the Roslagen region in the Swedish province of Uppland . On May 21, 1980 the Rosella was handed over to her owner and put into service on May 23, 1980 on the route from Turku to Mariehamn and Stockholm .

period of service

The Rosella remained on the route from Turku to Mariehamn and Stockholm for eight years and was the largest ship in service there, before she was replaced in this role by the new Amorella in October 1988 .

Originally, the ship should be sold to the Stena Line after the Amorella was commissioned . However, as the ship's maiden voyage was postponed by seven months due to delays in construction, the Rosella could not be handed over to Stena as planned, which is why SF Line had to pay compensation to the shipping company. In August 1988, the sister ship Turella was finally sold to the Stena Line, as it was in better condition and better suited for the new service. After the delayed commissioning of the Amorella , the Rosella took over the route of her sold sister ship from Naantali via Mariehamn to Kapellskär .

In 1993 the ship was modernized at Finnyards in Rauma and equipped with additional cabins on deck 4. It was then put back into service on January 1, 1994 on its old route between Turku, Mariehamn and Stockholm.

The Rosella on arrival in Helsinki, October 2007

In April 1997, the Rosella was replaced by the Isabella on the route from Turku to Stockholm and henceforth used for 24-hour mini cruises between Stockholm and Mariehamn in the winter months. In the summer months the ship was again in service between Naantali, Mariehamn and Kapellskär. In the summer of 1999 Naantali was replaced by Stockholm.

In 2003 the Rosella switched to the route from Helsinki to Tallinn and stayed there for the next five years before being replaced by the new Viking XPRS in April 2008 . In order to counter their deficit on this route, Viking Line planned their flagging out. The boycott measures taken against this by the International Transport Workers Federation were recognized by the ECJ as a violation of the freedom of establishment.

On May 30, 2008, the ship replaced the 36-year-old Ålandsfärjan on the route from Kapellskär to Mariehamn. Originally it was only supposed to stay there until the new Viking ADCC went into service in 2010. However, due to construction delays, the construction contract was canceled and the unfinished ship was offered for sale.

The Rosella has been in service on the route from Kapellskär to Mariehamn ever since. In between she was used again between Tallinn and Helsinki. With her commissioning in May 1980, she is the oldest ship in the Viking Line's fleet. In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , the Rosella will serve to secure the movement of goods between Sweden and Aland from the end of March 2020.
