Rudi Mair (born March 23, 1961 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian meteorologist , glaciologist and avalanche expert.

Life

Mair attended elementary school in Fulpmes in the Stubaital and the academic high school (humanistic branch) in Innsbruck. He then studied meteorology and glaciology at the University of Innsbruck . From 1988 to 1990 he worked as a scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, the majority of which worked at the Georg von Neumayer Station in Antarctica .

He has been with the Tyrolean Avalanche Warning Service since 1990 . Rudi Mair has been the head of the avalanche warning service in Tyrol since 1999 and a court expert for meteorology, avalanche science, avalanche accidents and avalanche protection since 2000 . From the end of November to the beginning of May he is active every day from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Mair has been a university lecturer in avalanche science since 2011.

Mair is regularly in demand as an interview partner and expert in Austrian, German and international media in the winter season. In addition to 'Tirol Today', it can also be seen regularly in ZiB1 and ZiB2, but also in Club2. In 1999 he was one of the main actors in the documentary about the avalanche disaster in Galtür, 'Anatomy of an Avalanche' in the science magazine 'Horizon' of the BBC and in 2004 in 'Force of Nature: Death in the Alps'. On January 16, 2011, he was featured in Planetopia magazine as an avalanche expert. He gives a daily avalanche report on Radio Tirol .

In addition, he and his colleague Patrick Nairz regularly give lectures on the dangers of avalanches both in Tyrol and nationwide in Chamonix , Davos , Val d'Aran , Munich , Sterzing , Bozen and Meran , Grenoble , The Hague , Canfranc and Salzburg .

His book Avalanche, written with Patrick Nairz . Recognizing the 10 decisive hazard patterns is the standard avalanche book for practice. It is intended for “active winter sports enthusiasts such as ski tourers , skiers and snowshoeers ”. It describes "common avalanche hazard patterns". Powerguide rates it as an “all-round new approach to conveying the complex topic of avalanches and risk checks in a practical manner. From practice for practice! ”Bergnews rates it as“ (vitally) important reading for all winter sports enthusiasts, but also for mountain guides who dare to venture out into unsecured terrain in winter. ”It was first published in 2010 and is in its 4th edition in 2012 published. Since 2013 there is also an Italian, a Czech and a Russian edition. Rudi Mair is married and has three children.
