Rudolf Fuchs (born March 5, 1890 in Poděbrady , Central Bohemia , Austria-Hungary , † February 17, 1942 in London ) was a German-Czechoslovak poet and translator .

life and work

Coming from a small Czech town, Fuchs grew up bilingually from the age of 10 and wrote poetry in German. At the end of the German secondary school he came to Prague as a teenager and lived there with Friedrich Thieberger's family . He took part as a soldier in the First World War and then became part of the Prague German writers' circle, where he met Johannes Urzidil , Franz Werfel , Max Brod , Felix Weltsch and Franz Kafka, among others . Since it was founded in 1921, he was a member of Komunistická strana Československa . His first book of poems appeared in 1913 under the title Der Meteor in Heidelberg , which was followed by Die Karawane in 1919 . Shortly before his death in exile in England, a third collection of poems appeared as a private print in London under the title Poems from Reigate .

The real meaning of Rudolf Fuchs, however, lies in his translations by the Silesian-Czech poet Petr Bezruč . Its famous Slezské písně collection was published in 1916 as Schlesische Lieder by Kurt Wolff- Verlag in Leipzig. This was followed in 1926 by a collection under the title Songs of a Silesian Miner in the same publishing house.

Fuchs also provided translations of other modern Czech poets, for example for the anthology Jüngste tschechische Lyrik (published in late 1916 by the Berlin publishing house of the expressionist magazine Die Aktion ). In 1926 there followed an extensive anthological work that extended further in time and was based exclusively on translations by Fuchs: Ein Erntekranz. From a hundred years of Czech poetry .

Fuchs died in 1942 during a German bombing raid on London.
