Peter Friedrich Rudolf Königer (born June 10, 1879 in Oldenburg (Oldb) ; † October 31, 1954 ibid) was a German lawyer and politician. From 1919 to 1933 he was Lord Mayor of Delmenhorst .

Life

Origin and early activities

Koeniger was the son of the general practitioner Heinrich Koeniger and his wife Johanne geb. Year. He attended grammar school in Oldenburg and studied law at the universities of Munich , Göttingen , Leipzig and Berlin . On October 2, 1905, he joined the Delmenhorst city administration as a trainee lawyer and soon represented the then mayor Erich Koch-Weser during his absence. In September 1907 he was elected city syndicus . During the First World Warfought from the beginning of the war on August 2, 1914 until his wounding on May 31, 1916 as captain of the artillery on the Western Front . Then he was postponed until December 1917 on a complaint for official use at the Delmenhorst city council by the army service. He then spent the last year of the war in the governorate of Livonia, which was occupied by German troops .

Mayor of Delmenhorst

After his return to Germany, he was elected mayor of Delmenhorst in 1919. Through his leadership qualities and hard work he earned himself a respected position and was active in many areas of local self-government despite inflation and the global economic crisis . In particular, Königer ensured that the poor system was reorganized into contemporary care for the socially disadvantaged, promoted social housing through targeted funding for the construction of small homes, and the further development of Delmenhorst through a clever land acquisition policy. He also promoted the improvement of the infrastructure through the establishment of the Delmenhorst-Harpstedter Railway and the Delmenhorst – Lemwerder railway line and promoted public construction activity, for example in 1928 with the construction of the city hospital. He also tried to found the Delmenhorster Sparkasse. In 1929 the closer town and municipality of Delmenhorst were united.

After the seizure of power by the National Socialists to Königer was due to its high reputation, first stop in his office yet. Since a dismissal was to be avoided, he was only put up for disposition by Reich Governor Carl Röver on June 30, 1933 at the suggestion of State Commissioner Wilhelm Müller , King's designated successor - that is, forced retirement.

After 1933

After his retirement until the end of the Second World War , Königer lived in Hamburg . On September 1, 1945, he became President of the Oldenburg-Bremen State Insurance Company and finally retired on March 31, 1952.

From 1946 to 1948, Koeniger was also the first president of the State Administrative Court of Oldenburg .

Honors

In recognition of his services, Königer was made an honorary citizen of the city of Delmenhorst on June 4, 1951 . He also received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in May 1952 .
