Wumpscut ( spelling: wumpscut:) was a music project founded in 1991 by the German musician Rudolf "Rudy" Ratzinger (born June 3, 1966 in Gangkofen ).

Project history

From 1989 to 1991 Ratzinger was a DJ for Dark Alternative Music and EBM in the pipeline discotheque near Munich . In the meantime he started experimenting with synthesizers and samplers . In May 1991 he founded the audio project: Wumpscut :.

The logo for Wumpscut is similar to the logo of the fictional Weyland Yutani Corporation , a corporation from the Alien saga. The project name ": Wumpscut:" is, according to Ratzinger, "purely synthetic".

Soylent Green , the first track on his 1993 debut album, became a hit on the black scene . The piece is named after the science fiction film Soylent Green from 1973 and contains samples from the German dubbed version (including "Soylent Green is human flesh" ).

In 1995 Ratzinger founded his own music label, Beton Kopf Media (BKM), in order to better realize his musical ideas. The first release there was the EP CD Gomorra , since then Wumpscut has published his work exclusively on BKM. For the American market, licensed editions have been published by the US label Metropolis Records since 1996 , which differ in parts from the European versions.

There were also collaborations - mainly through mutual remixes - with u. a. Haujobb , Suicide Commando , Haus Arafna , Das Ich , Der Blutharsch or Kirlian Camera .

One of the special features was that, as a rule, limited box sets were released for albums that contained numerous stickers, posters and other fan articles. On the other hand, Ratzinger did not give wumpscut live appearances. In August 2017, Ratzinger announced that it would discontinue the project. He was fed up with producing music more or less for free, he told the English-language side-line magazine .

Producer activity

In addition to his work as a musician, Rudolf Ratzinger is also active as a producer . In 1996 Ratzinger founded the label Mental Ulcer Forges (MUF), on which albums by musicians friends appear at irregular intervals. So appeared z. B. the first album of the Powernoise project Noisex , two albums of the electro-industrial project Infact and since 2006 all albums of the electro project Yendri on this label.

Artistic style

The main characteristic of Wumpscut is the provocation through music, lyrics and album artwork . Most of the pieces of music deal with acts of violence, death and the Christian religion as a particularly great evil. There are provocative samples in many of his tracks, for example in Untermensch :

"Once upon a time there was a gullible people who believed in Santa Claus, but Santa Claus was really the gas man!"

- Wumpscut : Untermensch , quote from the film The Tin Drum

or in Breathe , where a child's voice proclaims:

"One day we're going to kill all the filthy niggers and Jews and then everything will be clean."

- Wumpscut : Breathe , quote from the movie Betrayed .

In Total War z. B. Samples from Goebbels' Sportpalastrede and Hitler's speech to the SA and SS at the 1936 Reich Party Congress are used.

The music genre of Wumpscut, which was mainly influenced by early hardcore electro pioneers like Leæther Strip , was referred to as "Endzeit-Industrial" or "Endzeit" because of the dark lyrics and the aggressive sounds of the debut album ( Music For A Slaughtering Tribe / MFAST ) -EBM ". Since the music is very complex, from danceable rhythms to calm (but still dark) pieces, it is difficult to classify. If a classification is not waived from the outset and the music is designated as independent, the danceable single releases are generally referred to as hardcore-electro, electro , electro-industrial or a mixture of these, while the other pieces are often very experimental in nature and also have strong influences from ( darkambient and noise .

public perception

In addition to regular interviews and CD reviews in music magazines, reports on Wumpscut were mainly related to the following events:

Witten murder

A report by Bild in 2001 attracted a lot of attention . The so-called "Witten Satan Couple", who committed a ritual murder and related to Wumpscut, became known through the tabloid media in Germany. In this context, Bild printed the text of the play Bunkertor 7 and assumed that the play had an influence on the murder. In response, Ratzinger produced a gloomy sound collage under the title Ruda with numerous speech samples from the related reporting. As a result, Bild published a falsified interview with Rudolf Ratzinger during the time of the trial that was part of the murder. A total of two official wumpscut T-shirts, whose print motifs refer to the crime, were produced.

Collaboration with "Der Blutharsch"

In 2001 a remix of the wumpscut piece Wreath of Barbs from the controversial project Der Blutharsch was released . In 2003 Wumpscut released a remix of the Blood Ass track "Achtung" in return. Because of this collaboration, Ratzinger drew criticism from parts of the black scene. Ratzinger refused to distance himself from his collaboration with Blutharsch boss Albin Julius and broke off contact with the music magazine Sonic Seducer , as the latter had repeatedly expressed criticism on the subject. Ratzinger himself expresses himself on the CD Preferential Tribe , which contains the remix of Achtung :

"Wumpscut is no profascist and / or racist project / act - Free your mind for a second thought ..."

Kauhajoki rampage

In 2008 the media became aware of Wumpscut because the perpetrator identified himself conspicuously with the band. He called himself Wumpscut86 on YouTube and quoted there on videos from the text of the song "War".
