Schimmelsprung ruins (Lower Austria)
Schimmelprung ruin

The Schimmelprung ruin is located in Thunau am Kamp near Gars am Kamp in the Kamptal in Lower Austria , not far from the Gars am Kamp castle ruins , and stands on a rock about 100 meters above the right bank of the Kamp.

history

Thunau Castle was first mentioned in a document from 1196 and was the seat of the Thunau ministerial family (Thumbenove). At the end of the 14th century it began to decline.

The name Schimmelprung, however, only got the ruin from the legends that have grown up around this ruin. In some of them the lord of the castle is referred to as a Knight Templar , in others a robber baron . In all versions he is portrayed as a very domineering and brutal knight who exploited his subjects to the last. After a while, the oppressed peasants no longer put up with this and besieged the castle. When the castle was stormed, the lord wanted to flee with his white horse. When he realized the hopeless situation, he gave his horse the spurs and threw himself over the rock face.

The castle was not rebuilt and has since fallen into ruin. The area of the former castle can still be guessed today due to the remains of the wall. Towards the Kamp there is still a very large part of the wall, with loopholes still in place. In addition, parts of the wall with passages can still be seen.

Castle

The castle was built in the south of Thunau on a rock that slopes vertically on three sides to the river Kamp. Access was from the west and was secured by three section trenches . In the former castle square Bering was keep set in the west corner. The barrel-vaulted basement of the keep has been partially preserved.
