Erkki Ruoslahti

Erkki Ruoslahti (born February 16, 1940 in Puumala , Finland ) is a Finnish - American cell biologist and cancer researcher at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and the University of California, Santa Barbara .

Life

Ruoslahti earned a bachelor's degree in medicine from Helsinki University in 1961 , an MD in 1965 and a Ph.D. in 1967. in immunology . As a postdoctoral fellow , he went to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). In 1970 he received a professorship for serology and bacteriology at the University of Helsinki and in 1975 for the same subject combination at the University of Turku . In 1976 Ruoslahti went to the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte , California as a Senior Research Scientist and later head of the Department of Immunology . In 1979 he moved to the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla , California, where he held various senior positions, including President and CEO from 1989 to 2001 . Since 1980 Ruoslahti has also been a professor at the University of California, San Diego, first in the pathology department , and finally in the bioengineering department . Currently (as of 2016) he is an Adjunct Distinguished Professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara .

Act

Ruoslahti is considered a leader in the field of cell adhesion molecules . He discovered that the cell-binding domain of several important proteins of the extracellular matrix consists of the simple RGD sequence . Ruoslahti could show that the endothelial cells of various organs unique receptors expressing that allow a targeting allow normal organs or of certain tumors.

Thomson Reuters has been one of the favorites for a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine since 2012 .
