The football department of the Ryūtsū Keizai University ( Japanese 流通 経 済 大学 サ ッ カ ー 部 Ryūtsū Keizai Daigaku Sakkā-bu ; full name 流通 経 済 大学 体育 局 サ ッ カ ー 部 部 Ryūtsū Keizai Sakkaku of the sports department of Taiut Ryūtsū Keizai University ”) is located on its campus in Ryūgasaki in the Japanese prefecture of Ibaraki . In addition to a team playing in the university leagues, it also maintains two independent club teams that participate in the men's games of the Japanese Football Association . Both the Ryūtsū Keizai University FC ( 流通 経 済 大学 FC Ryūtsū Keizai Daigaku Efu Shī ; between 2005 and 2010) and the Ryūtsū Keizai Dragons Ryūgasaki ( 流通 経 済 大学 ド ラ ゴ ン ズ 龍 ケ 崎 Ryūtsū Keizai Daigaku Doragaki have been there since 2015; each since 2015 prepare the Japan Football League , the nominally highest Japanese amateur league.

history

The department was established along with the establishment of the university in 1965. After years of only playing at the prefecture level, the team first reached the second division of the Kanto University League in 1999 , but rose again straight away. It would take two more years before one could establish oneself permanently at regional level after a renewed promotion. Successes quickly become apparent there. After winning the second division in 2003, RKU rose to the highest university league in the region, where a second place was immediately achieved. This series was reason enough for the Japanese University Football Association to register the club as a participant in the national regional league finals . Completely surprisingly, the team reached the finals there and finished second, which meant that the university was allowed to register a team for the Japan Football League (for details see section Ryūtsū Keizai University FC ).

In 2006, 2008 and 2009 the university league of the Kantō region was won. In addition, RKU was successful three times (2007, 2013, 2014) in the prestigious and Japan-wide Prime Minister's Cup for university teams and in 2014 at the national university championships. So far, the team has qualified for the Kaiser Cup eight times, most recently in 2015, when they managed to reach the second round with a win after a penalty shoot-out against second division club Tochigi SC .

Ryūtsū Keizai University FC

Ryūtsū Keizai University FC was founded specifically for the purpose of participating in the 2005 Japan Football League . Participation was made possible by the regulations of the league itself, which since its reform in 1999 also allowed university teams, provided they successfully contested the regional league final round. After Kokushikan University FC and Shizuoka Sangyo University SC, RKU FC was the third team to make it into the JFL in this way.

In total, Ryūtsū Keizai University FC spent six seasons in the Japan Football League. By far the best ranking was achieved in 2008 with a sixth place, otherwise the team was more in the lower midfield of the table. Before the start of the 2010 season, the previously possible simultaneous registration of players for both teams (i.e. for both the university league and the JFL team) was abolished by the JFL. As a consequence, RKU FC rose at the end of the season as a knocked-off bottom of the table in the Kanto Regionalliga .

In contrast to Ryūtsū Keizai University FC, Ryūtsū Keizai Dragons Ryūgasaki was initially an independent club that was founded in 2001 as Ryūgasaki FC ( 竜 ヶ 崎 FC ). Nevertheless, the club had long been the character of a farm team for the University League and later the JFL team. The name is a play on words, since Ryūgasaki means "dragon's cape".

Ryūgasaki FC began playing in the leagues of Ibaraki Prefecture . For the 2003 season it was renamed Club Dragons ( ク ラ ブ ・ ド ラ ゴ ン ズ , Kurabu Doragonsu ); this was accompanied by a slow rise through the league pyramid - in 2006 the prefecture league was won, a year later Division 2 of the Kanto regional league. Since then, the club has always played in the Regionalliga Oberhaus with two one-year breaks.

In 2014, the Dragons qualified, although they only played in Division 2 at that time, by reaching the finals in the Japanese Amateur Cup for the Regional League finals. This surprisingly ended with a third place in the final round of the tournament. Since the Japan Football League increased the field of participants to the old strength of sixteen teams at the beginning of the 2015 season after a transition year due to the foundation of the J3 League with only fourteen teams, this third place was sufficient for promotion to the JFL. The Dragons had skipped a league in one fell swoop.

Along with reaching the Japan Football League, the name changed to Ryūtsū Keizai Dragons Ryūgasaki . After a 14th place in the first JFL season, the team achieved the greatest success in their history to date by surprisingly winning the first half of the 2016 championship , which is synonymous with making it to the championship finals of this season. There they had to admit defeat to Honda FC after a 2-2 first leg in front of their own audience and a 0-1 in Hamamatsu .
