Rydułtowy (German Rydultau ) is a city in the powiat Wodzisławski , Silesian Voivodeship in Poland .
geography
Rydułtowy extends over 15 km², of which 62% are used for agriculture and 2% are covered with forest.
The city with a population of 21,851 is located 49 km southwest of Katowice . Geographically, Rydułtowy is located in the southwestern part of the Silesian Upland (Wyżyna Śląska) .
history
The first written mention of Rydultau comes from the year 1228. Under the name Rudolphi Villa , the village is in the property and tithe register of the diocese of Wroclaw (Liber Fundationis Episcopatus Vratislaviensis) . The discovery of coal deposits at the end of the 17th century was decisive for the further development. The first mine was opened in 1792, and more followed over the next few decades. Instead of the present-day town, there were still the villages of Ober- and the larger Nieder-Rydultau, which had been part of Prussia since 1742 and the Rybnik district since 1816 .
After the referendum in Upper Silesia in 1921, Upper and Lower Rydultau fell to Poland as Rydułtowy Górne and Rydułtowy Dolne , respectively . In 1926 the places Rydułtowy Dolne, Rydułtowy Górne, Orłowiec (Orlowietz) , Radoszowy Dolne (Nieder-Radoschau) , Radoszowy Górne (Upper Radoschau) and Kolonii Buńczowiec (Bunczowietz) were merged into one municipality Rydułtowy . In 1952 Rydułtowy received city rights, which it lost again in 1976 when it was incorporated into the city of Wodzisław Śląski , but was able to regain it as an independent municipality in 1992.

Attractions
- The neo-Gothic parish church of St. Georg was built in 1896 according to plans by the architect Ludwig Schneider. Near the church is an atonement cross from 1628, which was carved in the shape of a Lorraine cross and is the only one of its kind in Poland.
- The slag heap of Rydułtowy is a visible sign of the local coal industry. Over time, the unusable, deaf material from coal mining was piled up 120–130 meters high, so that a 407 m npm high mountain dominates the landscape today.
