The province of Southern Finland ( Finnish. Etelä-Suomen lääni , Swedish Södra Finlands län ) was a province ( lääni ) of Finland from 1997 to 2009 . It included the landscapes of Uusimaa , Ostuusimaa , Kanta-Häme , Päijät-Häme , Kymenlaakso and South Karelia . The area was 34,388 square kilometers, the population was around 2.2 million (2009). The administrative seat was the city of Hämeenlinna .

The province of southern Finland was created in the administrative reform of 1997 from the previous provinces of Uusimaa , Kymi , the south of the province of Häme and some municipalities from the province of Mikkeli . At the beginning of 2010 the provinces were abolished. State administration of the area is now carried out by the Regional Administrative Authority ( aluehallintovirasto ) of Southern Finland.

The province of Southern Finland had a share in the historical landscapes of Uusimaa, Häme and Karelia . The coat of arms of the former province of southern Finland is also composed of their historical coats of arms.
