The Re 484 of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) is a series of two-system electric locomotives that are driven by three-phase asynchronous motors. The locomotives come from the Traxx family from Bombardier Transportation and bear the manufacturer designation TRAXX F140 MS2 .

Changes compared to the Traxx predecessors

The Re 484 is a further development of the Traxx series F140 AC1 , which includes part of the DB BR 185 and SBB Re 482 series. The most obvious change is a revised locomotive body that meets the then new, stricter safety standards with regard to crash resistance. The easiest way to see the change is on the front of the locomotive, which runs straight down in the area of the lower signal lights and is not retracted as in the first series of the BR 185.In addition, a flap for removing the air conditioning is attached below the front window and the number the handle bars in the front area have been increased. The engine also received a new water-cooled IGBT - inverter .

The Re 484 was procured for international traffic between Switzerland and Italy and accordingly has 15 kV AC equipment and 3 kV DC equipment. The converter would also allow use under the other power systems used in Europe 25 kV 50 Hz and 1.5 kV direct current, but the locomotive is not equipped with the necessary train protection systems.

Country-specific equipment

The specifications of the SBB Cargo tender called for a locomotive for freight traffic that can be used freely in Switzerland and Italy and, if necessary, can also be retrofitted for traffic to Germany.

Various country-specific requirements and the various train control systems represent technical obstacles for cross-border traffic. The SBB has therefore initially only had the locomotives equipped for Switzerland and Italy. In the delivery state, it therefore only has the Integra-Signum and ZUB 262ct systems for Switzerland and RS4 Codici for Italy. At the beginning of 2006, the SBB decided to equip the machines with ETCS Level 2 (European Train Control System) and Sistema di Controllo della Marcia del Treno (SCMT).

commitment

SBB Cargo

The original tender was for twelve locomotives with an option for a further six locomotives, which was redeemed before the first machine was delivered. Between February 21 and April 12, 2005, a total of 16 locomotives were accepted by the SBB; the last two followed on August 4.

The locomotives are used from Bellinzona before combined transport trains to Gallarate and from Chiasso before steel trains to Desio . Some freight trains are already hauled by Re 484 north of Gotthard in Arth-Goldau .

At the end of 2005, SBB reordered three more locomotives from Bombardier, which were delivered in 2007. In September 2007, three identical locomotives were also leased long-term from MRCE.

Since the early summer of 2019, the locomotives have also been in regular use on the Lötschberg-Simplon corridor, which means that the locomotives usually get to Basel RB as double units.

Cisalpino

Re 484 with Cisalpino foils

Five locomotives were leased to Cisalpino from the end of 2005 to the end of 2007 , where they were used in front of passenger trains in cross-border traffic to Italy on the Milan - Geneva and Milan - Bern routes. The locomotives were provided with adhesive films from the Cisalpino. The intended end of use on the occasion of the commissioning of the ETR 610 Cisalpino Due , originally planned for mid-2007 , was exceeded due to the delivery delay. Since SBB Cargo now needs all of the locomotives for the orders in Italy and the retrofitting with the Italian train protection system SCMT itself, an extension of the rental was waived.

At the beginning of 2007, MRCE put five identical locomotives in black paint into service. Two machines are currently leased to Crossrail , the other three were leased on a long-term basis in September 2007 by SBB Cargo Italia and repainted in the SBB Cargo color scheme. Initially, the locomotives had the Italian designation E 484 101-105, which was changed to E 484 901-905 after a few weeks.
