The diesel locomotives of the SJ Z6 (VIII) series were bought by the Swedish State Railways Statens Järnvägar (SJ) from 1953 to 1957 to replace steam locomotives in shunting and light handover services.

They complemented the V3 series locomotives that were also procured from Germany and were similar to the Type V 36 of the Deutsche Bundesbahn . From the same model range came the series named Z4 (XIII) , similar to the German V 20 .

The small locomotives were used in the handover service and at train stations and in the workshop service in railway depots.

prehistory

In the 1940s and 1950s, the state railways began dividing the small locomotives into performance groups. Rail vehicles from different manufacturers and with different looks, all of which corresponded to the same performance level, were classified in group Z6 . With the nationalization of many private railway companies, there were more unique pieces that could then be found under this series.

This series was classified as the 8th variant of two-axle small locomotives in the Z6 series of the SJ.

SJ Z6 (VIII)

The first 25 locomotives in the series were procured between 1953 and 1956. It soon became apparent that, with an axle load of 14 tons, they could be used more widely than the ten Z4 (XIII) delivered by Deutz at the same time . It was therefore decided not to procure any further Z4 (XIII) series , but instead to procure more Z6 (VIII) .

They had a diesel-hydraulic change gear of the Voith L33yU type .

SJ Z64

With the revision of the numbering plan at the SJ in 1956, the 25 locomotives were given the series designation Z64 . The company numbers remained the same. A year later another ten locomotives ( Z64 412-421 ) were procured.

At the end of the 1970s, the SJ modernized their locomotives. The original Deutz engine was replaced by a more powerful Scania engine in the Z64 345, 346, 348, 350, 387–390, 396, 412–416 and 418–420. This allowed the top speed to be increased slightly to 53 km / h. The driver's cabs have been converted and soundproofed.

They were used practically all over Sweden, including the depots or train stations in Filipstad , Kristinehamn , Örebro , Malmö , Kil , Arvika and Daglösene the locomotives were in use.

Of the locomotives that kept their old engine, the Z64 356, 393 and 394 were shut down and scrapped in 1991. In the same year and later, many locomotives with new engines were removed from the SJ's inventory and sold to private railway companies and as factory locomotives.

Railway service vehicles

In the early 1990s, SJ had withdrawn most of their locomotives from regular service. Some locomotives were transferred to the service vehicle or shunting equipment park and were redrawn in the Qze series, the redesignation and further whereabouts are shown in the following table:

Used by private railways and as factory locomotives

EuroMaint and SweMaint took over locomotives for shunting in their railway workshops. The scrap trade in Ekefors bought many types of locomotives that were still usable. He kept them ready as rental locomotives for private railway companies or as reserve vehicles for deadline work. If the locomotives could no longer be rented or if the deadlines had expired, these locomotives were often scrapped. Several landed at museum railways to do the shunting there. Some of them were not preserved as museum pieces after the deadline, but were also scrapped.

TGOJ V1

The Trafikaktiebolaget Grängesberg – Oxelösunds järnväger received four locomotives in 1953, they were taken over into the local stock as V1 811–814 . In 1955 the V1 815 followed as a further delivery. V1 815 and 814 remained unchanged and were retired and scrapped in 1965 and 1983.

TGOJ Z5

The V1 811, 812 and 815 were given a new series number in 1974 without any modifications. From this point on, they were designated as Z5 31–33 in the order given. The first of this new series was the Z5 32, which was withdrawn in 1983, followed a year later by the Z5 33. The Z5 31 remained in service until 1986.

Z64 391 of the SJ came to TGOJ in 1985. In addition to the original SJ number, it is said to have had the designation Z5 34. It was sold to Lovisagruvan AB in Stråssa in 1992, joined Carbital AB in Köping in 1995 and later to ECC International Europe AB , also in Köping. In 2006 it was scrapped there.

Z5 33 (the former V1 815) was kept and can be seen in the Grängesberg Railway Museum.

MLJ Z6

The privately owned Malmö – Limhamn Järnväg (MLJ) received an ex-works locomotive in 1954, the Z6 11 . The machine came to Mf KLJ and was parked in 2009.

In 1992 MLJ took over two more locomotives from the SJ's stock, the Z64 346 became MLJ 14 and the Z64 387 became MLJ 14 . Both joined Benders Sverige AB in Bålsta in 2008 .

SL Z64

Z64 349 was parked after its service at SJ 1974 and sold as work locomotive No. 17 to Surahammars Bruk in Spännarhyttan. In 1981 it came to Saltsjöbanan (SL) and was given the number Z64 15 . In 1993 it was transferred to Stockholms Ånglokssällskap (SÅS) in Västberga.

Existing locomotives

In addition to the former Z64 349 at SÅS, there are other locomotives, some of which are operational. The following list contains some of them:

  • Z64 352 - Bergslagernas Järnvägssällskap (BJ)
  • Z64 354 - Järnvägssällskapet Åmål-Årjängs Järnvägs (JÅÅJ)
  • Z64 388 and 412 - BS Mekaniska AB , Falköping
  • Z64 389 - SweMaint AB , Helsingborg
  • Z64 417 - Stiftelsen Dal-Västra Värmlands Järnväg (DVVJ), Åmål
