Geographical location

The hall building is located about 100 meters north of the Neustadt main station , from which it is separated by the station forecourt . The northern terminus of the Pfälzer Oberlandbahn , a narrow-gauge railway line that ran in the direction of Landau from 1912 to 1955 , used to be on its south side . On the north side of the hall there is the Hetzelplatz , behind which the old town of Neustadt begins. The forecourt east of the main entrance is named after the Neustadt publisher Daniel Meininger , who had the idea to choose the German Wine Queen .

history

The hall was built between 1871 and 1873, when the Palatinate belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria , by the Munich architect Albert Geul in the neo-Renaissance style. In 1949 Elisabeth Kuhn , later Gies (1930–2012), was crowned the first German Wine Queen in the Saalbau . A major fire on the night of November 24th to 25th, 1980 severely damaged the building of the hall and made it unusable. After the facility was rebuilt from 1982 to 1984, it was re-inaugurated in 1984 in the presence of the then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl and the then Rhineland-Palatinate Prime Minister Bernhard Vogel .

The two-storey hall building is modeled on a three- aisled basilica ; however, the historical location of the choir in the east of churches has not been realized, but rotated by 180 degrees. This is why the hall building has its main entrance with a large flight of stairs and a canopy supported by six columns on the east side. Behind the east facade lies a 210 m² large vestibule, the entrance foyer , to which the approximately 21 meter long main building adjoins. It extends to the west and consists of three parallel halls. The 500 m² ballroom runs through the middle ; This is - similar to the basilica - illuminated by a arc of light that rises from the center of the roof. On both sides of the ballroom are the Scheffel and Beethoven halls , each with an area of 200 m². In the west, the building ends in a semicircular choir-like porch, which is about seven meters long and in which there are front stages.

The facility offers up to 1,440 seats for performances and an area of 1,500 m² for exhibitions.

Regular events

Inscription at the hall: "Coronation site of the German Wine Queen"

In the hall construction - with a few exceptional cases - the German Wine Queen and her princesses are chosen from the applicants from the wine-growing regions of Germany every year as part of the German Wine Festival ; this event will be broadcast nationwide on television. The Palatinate Wine Queen and her princesses are also elected at the German Wine Festival in the hall . Other events include Mundus Vini , the “largest officially recognized wine competition in the world” according to the organizers, and the Great Palatinate Wine Tasting of the Palatinate Wine Brotherhood .
