Sabrina

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sabrina is a female given name .

Origin and meaning

The original word "Sabrina" comes from "Habren" or "Hafren" (probably Celtic for "river").

Sabrina is also the Latin name of the River Severn in England, which is said to have been named after a girl who drowned in it. Her legend is told in John Milton's Comus : Sabrina was a virgin king's daughter who was pursued by her stepmother and drowned in the river that has been named after her ever since. According to this legend, she is said to have become a nymph or goddess of this river after her death . Therefore, the meaning of the name Sabrina is often given as "nymph of the river Severn" or the like. She is also considered the patron saint of virgins in need .

The poem by John Milton gave the name to the filmed piece :

"Sabrina fair, listen where thou art sitting,
Under the glassy cool translucent wave,
In twisted braids of lilies knitting
The loose train of thy amber-dropping hair;
Listen for dear honor's sake,
Goddess of the silver lake,
Listen and save! [...] "
J. Milton: Comus.
