Sachsenmetall is short for the business association of the metal and electrical industry of Saxony e. V. based in Dresden . It represents companies in the metal and electrical industry (M + E) in Saxony and, as an umbrella organization, unites the general employers' association Saxony e. V. (AGS) and the collective bargaining association of the Saxon metal and electrical industry e. V. (VSME). Together with other employers' associations in the M + E industry, the VSME is a member of Gesamtmetall .

organization

On June 18, 2001, the two employers' associations of the Saxon metal and electrical industry, AGS and VSME, founded the umbrella association Sachsenmetall as a joint interest group. Such a common umbrella organization of a collective bargaining and a collective bargaining employer association did not exist in the German metal and electrical industry until then. Sachsenmetall currently has over 300 members. Membership is voluntary and is open to any company in the M + E industry with headquarters or branches in Saxony. Each full member has one vote. This means that all companies, regardless of their size and orientation, are equally involved in the decisions.

The association is run by a voluntary board, headed by the president. The management is responsible for the ongoing association business. The president is Jörg Brückner. Andreas Huhn, managing partner of Omeras GmbH, has been honorary president since 2014. Hartmut Fiedler had been managing director of the economic policy department for the association since 2000 , before he was appointed state secretary in the Ministry of Economics, Labor and Transport of the Free State of Saxony in 2009.

Through its VSME and AGS associations, Sachsenmetall is a member of the Vereinigung der Sächsischen Wirtschaft eV, the umbrella organization of Saxon employers and business associations. This membership ensures a close connection to the Federation of German Industries (BDI) and the Federation of German Employers' Associations .

The association made headlines in 2003 when it successfully prevailed in negotiations with IG Metall , which wanted to reduce working hours in the East from 38 to 35 hours. After weeks of disputes that culminated in a roughly four-week strike, the employers prevailed, IG Metall lost a strike for the first time in more than 50 years, and the 38-hour week has remained until today. This dispute also sparked a nationwide discussion about competitive working hours.

Tasks and activities

The tasks of the association include labor and social law , securing skilled workers, shaping economic and political framework conditions and flexible working relationships as well as strengthening research and development. The Saxon state government reacted to the swift implementation of the changes to the Joint Task Directive for the Improvement of the Regional Economic Structure (GA), which had already been planned for two months, as demanded by Sachsenmetall in 2009, with a timely implementation. In order to secure young skilled workers for the Saxon metal and electrical industry in the course of the demographic development, the association organizes the industry-specific job and training fair "M + E Future Days" several times a year. In order to promote the dialogue between politics and medium-sized businesses, the association has launched various platforms on relevant topics in recent years, e.g. B. the Forum Mittelstandsfinanzierung, (2003), the Saxon Controller College (2003) and the Saxon Entrepreneur College (2004). In recognition of the outstanding achievements of Saxon apprentices and companies, Sachsenmetall annually awards the prize for the best apprentices in the Saxon metal and electrical industry and the training company of the year. Every two years, in cooperation with the technical universities in Saxony, z. B. the Technical University of Dresden , the Johann Andreas Schubert Prize, an award for excellent dissertations and diploma theses.
