Sada Carolyn Thompson (born September 27, 1929 in Des Moines , Iowa , † May 4, 2011 in Waterbury , Connecticut ) was an American actress .

Life

Thompson graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh from her acting degree in 1949 . Theater engagements on regional stages followed. From 1954 on she also appeared in film and television roles.

From 1976 to 1980, Thompson was mainly busy filming the television series An American Family , in which she played the family mother "Kate Lawrence". In 1978 she received an Emmy for the role. The series was broadcast in Germany from 1979 to 1981 with great success in the first program of ARD , which Thompson also made known in Germany. In addition to numerous film and television appearances, she returned to the theater on Broadway in 1993 after a long break .

Because of her voice, which many people found to be pleasant and warm-sounding, she was often hired as voice -over speaker for documentaries and audio books in the United States .

Thompson had been married to Donald Stewart since 1949.

Awards

She made her debut on Broadway in 1955, where she enjoyed great success until the mid-1970s and won several American theater awards, including the 1970 Obie Award for Best Performance in The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds and 1972 Tony Award for Best Actress for her role in Twigs .
