Safe House is a British crime drama - anthology series from the year 2015 by Michael Crompton. The focus of the two seasons so far is a former police officer who has converted a guest house into a safe house with his partner and for the first time is taking in a family that has been the victim of a crime and is still at risk from the perpetrator for their protection.

Safe House was produced by Eleventh Hour Films based on an idea from Michael Crompton, who also wrote the screenplay for the first season and a guest appearance as Eddie Reynolds' lawyer in the third episode . In the second season, the script was written by Ed Whitmore and Tracey Malone; Both seasons were directed by Marc Evans . The filming location was the British Lake District and the nearby town of Coniston in the first season ; the second season was shot on the Welsh island of Anglesey .

The series has so far consisted of two seasons with 4 episodes each and has been broadcast on Independent Television since April 20, 2015 . The broadcast in German-speaking countries took place from February 2 to February 9, 2016 on ZDFneo in double episodes. In September 2015, the series was extended for a second season. The second season, entitled Safe House: The Crow , aired from September 7th to September 28th, 2017. The German first broadcast of the second season took place from November 27, 2017 to December 4, 2017 again on ZDFneo.

As an anthology concept, it was originally planned that the main character of the first season, Robert Carmichael ( Christopher Eccleston ) would remain an integral part and that different people would be included in his safe house in each season. After Eccleston surprisingly dropped out before the second season, the concept was changed so that the operators of the Safe House also change and the following season has a different Safe House as its subject.
season 1
During the last assignment of the former police officer Robert Carmichael, the witness Susan Reynolds, whom he was supposed to protect, was shot. She was due to testify against her husband Eddie Reynolds that day; he has been in prison since then. When new video material from the night of the crime emerges, he wants to appeal.
Robert now lives with his wife Katy in a remote location near a lake in the mountains. On his birthday he is visited by his former colleague Mark and persuaded to register the house as a safe house. On the same day he received his first order: when the Blackwell family was at a fair, their son Joe was approached by a man named Michael and taken away. The father David is able to prevent this kidnapping, but the perpetrator knocks him down and stabs a passerby who wanted to intervene. Because the perpetrator entered her house while the family is in the hospital with David, she is no longer safe there and is taken to Robert and Katy's safe house. The second son Sam, whose whereabouts were unknown to the family, also joins them after the police find him and the perpetrator is identified as Michael Collersdale. In the Safe House, Robert befriends Joe and takes a DNA sample from him, which reveals that his parents are not Ali and David Blackwell, but Collersdale and Gemma, Ali's sister, who has since been murdered by Collersdale. He can find out the whereabouts of Joe and kidnaps him again from the lake. After a chase, Robert manages to get Collersdale to hand him over Joe, and in the presence of the child, Collersdale is shot by police officers. Finally, it also emerges that before Susan's case was turned over to Robert, Mark had an affair with her and not Eddie Reynolds, but rather Mark paid and hired the shooter out of jealousy against Robert.
season 2
John Channing is handcuffed by a masked man in his home and his partner Julie Delaney is kidnapped. Former police officer Tom Brook is reminded of an earlier case, the crow, which happened just like that. Two of the three men later committed suicide out of grief; only one not: Simon Duke. While the police believe that this time it is an imitator of the perpetrator who was caught at the time, Tom, as then, argues that Griffin had an accomplice. He tries to investigate the case, but is repeatedly urged by the police to stay out of it. After a feint by the perpetrator, John and Dani are placed in Tom's Safe House. John secretly pays someone to beat Griffin up in prison to find out Julie's whereabouts. Griffin names him, but Julie can no longer be found there. Meanwhile, Tom's partner discovers a dating profile of Julie that Dani created, allegedly because she doesn't like John, but in truth she wants to seduce him. Tom finds a connection between John's house and the locations of the dead husbands in Roger Lane, a property salesman. A review of his empty buildings leads to the rescue of Julie Delaney. But later Tom finds John dead on a construction site. Liam, Simon's son who used to work for John, is suspected after he ran away. But he gets in touch with Tom and says he found John and tried to revive him. Tom takes Liam to the Safe House and Simon follows too. Lane tells police that Simon (a photographer) and Griffin (a locksmith) both worked for him and knew each other, and that Simon's wife cheated on him and that he blames men for it. Liam finds a rifle and the mask of the crow in his father's pocket and he admits to having killed his own wife and John to keep the family together. Simon ties Tom and kidnaps Sam; after he can free himself and has followed Simon, the police arrive while Tom pushes Simon underwater and asks where Sam is.

season 1
The first season of Safe House has been compared to Scandinavian crime series of the genre Nordic Noir . Hitchecker.de says: "Director Marc Evans (" Collision ") prefers to spend time with atmospheric, but sometimes a little tough, landscape shots. With his pale, gloomy images, accompanied by a threatening score, he orientates himself clearly Scandinavian thriller series such as " Kommissarin Lund " and " Die Brücke ". This creates an exciting atmosphere right from the start, even if the plot takes a lot of time and does not require a lot of action. " And on moviebreak.de is formulated: "The landscape and the camera work is" Safe House ", and you really have to give that to the series, breathtakingly beautiful. The pictures are kept cool, you could almost mistake them for a Scandinavian production." Oliver Junge from the FAZ positively emphasizes that the series skilfully undermines expectations. The acting of the main actor Eccleston is particularly praised; Lucy Mangan from the Guardian calls him an unmatched master of television. For boys it shows "a calm, brooding, sometimes grumpy charm." With his weatherproof (sports) clothing such as raincoats, neoprene swimsuits and balaclavas, he is reminiscent of a model for an outdoor catalog.
season 2
The second season was less well received and more criticized. Lucy Mangan writes that she has nothing new to offer. RadioTimes' Alison Graham looks at the stereotypes of crime drama and finds them dumb, unsurprising and unimaginative. For the twist, which throws away several wrong leads, but at the same time leaves too many questions unanswered in its explanation, the finale in particular was heavily criticized by the fans. Hitchecker.de judged that it was "a pretty weak performance - especially compared to the solid first season of the series!"
Publication on DVD
The first season of the series was released in German-speaking countries by Polyband on February 10, 2016, the second season on December 5, 2017. On May 3, 2019, a DVD box containing both seasons was released; here the first was named Safe House: The Lake .
