Saigon Kick is an American hard rock band from Miami .

history

Beginnings of the band (1984–1994)

Singer Matt Kramer and guitarist Jason Bieler have been making music together since 1984 . After bassist Tom Defile and drummer Phil Varone joined the duo four years later , the band Saigon Kick was formed. The band name comes from a friend of the musicians who was negative about the numerous films about the Vietnam War . Saigon was the capital of South Vietnam and was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in April 1975 .

Saigon Kick played countless concerts as the opening act for well-known bands. At a concert as opening act for Skid Row , a roadie from the main band noticed Saigon Kick's talent and he informed A&R man Jason Flom. This took Saigon Kick for Third Stone Records , the record label of actor Michael Douglas , under contract. With producer Michael Wagener , the band recorded the self-titled debut album, which was released in 1991. In a list of the 500 best albums of all time compiled by the German magazine Rock Hard , Saigon Kick ranked 102nd.

The band toured North America with Faith No More and Skid Row and in Europe with Extreme . During another North American tour in the opening act of King's X , there were disputes between Jason Bieler and the King's X manager, because Bieler complained about the short playing time of 20 minutes. As a consequence, Saigon Kick had to leave the tour. The band then began work on their second album, The Lizard . As the preferred producer Michael Wagener was in the studio with Warrant , Jason Bieler took over the production himself. The Lizard reached number 80 on the US album charts , while the single Love Is on the Way even reached number 12 on the US single charts . Both the album and the single were awarded gold records in the United States .

End of the band (1994-2000)

Shortly after the album was released, bassist Tom Defile had to leave the band and was replaced by Chris McLrnon. In 1994 the band began recording their third studio album, Water . Matt Kramer dropped out due to musical differences, so Jason Bieler took over the entire vocals. Due to the bad sales, her record company canceled the contract. According to Jason Bieler, the band is in a dilemma because of their stylistic diversity , because "the metal bands hated us because we were too alternative and the alternative bands hated us because we were too metal".

In 1995 the fourth studio album Devil in the Details was released , before the best-of album Greatest Mrs .: The Best of Saigon Kick and the demo compilation Moments from the Fringe were released three years later . 1999 saw the release of the last studio album Bastards , on which the new drummer Rick Sanders can be heard except for one song. The album was only released in East Asia. In 2000 the band broke up. In the following years two more live albums were released.

Jason Bieler formed the band Super TransAtlantic together with extreme bassist Pat Badger , who contributed a song for the soundtrack of the film American Pie . Phil Varone played for the band Skid Row between 2000 and 2004.

Reunification (since 2012)

In 2012 the band announced a return for 2013 with the cast of Matt Kramer, Phil Varone, Jason Bieler, Tom Defile and Chris McLernon. At the end of February 2013, shortly before the tour, it was announced that Tom Defile had left the reunion. There were a few concerts from March to April 2013, as well as gigs in April and October 2014. For two gigs in December 2014 Tom Defile returned to the band to represent Chris McLernon. In May 2015 it was announced that drummer Phil Varone had left the band. He will be replaced by Jonathan Mover at the concerts announced for 2015. Shortly afterwards, Chris McLernon also threw in the towel.
