Saint-Georges is a city in the southeast of the Canadian province of Quebec . It is located in the administrative region of Chaudière-Appalaches , about 85 km south of the provincial capital Québec and 30 km west of the border with the US state Maine . The administrative seat of the regional county municipality (municipalité régionale du comté) Beauce-Sartigan has an area of ​​198.21 km² and has 31,173 inhabitants (2011).

Saint-Georges is located in the Beauce region on both sides of the Rivière Chaudière . This tributary of the Saint Lawrence River flows south to north through the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains . To the southeast of the city center is the mouth of the Rivière du Loup , which comes from the southeast . The narrow river valleys are flanked on both sides by wooded hills that rise up to 180 meters above the valley floor. Various tributaries and -bäche, including the Rivière Famine , flow in part by deep-cut ravines .

history

In 1646, 1650 and 1651 the Jesuit missionary Gabriel Druillettes explored the Chaudière Valley and its surroundings in order to convert the Algonquians . Towards the end of the 17th century a large group of these natives settled down and founded a settlement called Sartigan near the mouth of the Rivière de Famine. Settlement by Europeans began gradually after the government of New France established two new seigneuries in 1736 . The actual founder of Saint-Georges is Johann Georg Pfotzer, a dealer from Wilstedt who took over the now unified Seigneurie in 1808 and began to develop it with the settlement of German colonists. In 1835 the parish of Saint-Georges was founded, the parish was founded in 1856. In 1907 Saint-Georges was connected to the railway network by the Quebec Central Railway , and in 1948 city status. In 1990 Saint-Georges-Ouest merged with Saint-Georges, and in 2001 Aubert-Gallion, Saint-Georges-Est and Saint-Jean-de-la-Lande were incorporated.
