Saint Brélade is one of the twelve parishes of Jersey . The municipality is located in the southwest of the island and comprises 7380 vergées (13 km², that is about 11% of the island's area). This makes it the second largest municipality in Jersey after Saint Ouen . The name is said to be derived from a Celtic or Welsh traveling preacher named Branwalator (also known as Branwallder , Broladre , Brelodre , Brélade ). The area was settled much earlier: the oldest finds from the Middle Paleolithic come from the cave of La Cotte de St. Brelade, which are also the oldest finds of this time on the Channel Islands .

The neighboring municipality is exclusively Saint Peter in the north and east.

The two sandy beaches belonging to the municipality, the bays of St. Brélades Bay and St. Aubin's Bay , the beaches of Ouaisné and Portelet, and the beaches of St. Ouens Bay are popular with the locals and are among the tourist destinations of the Jersey Island.

The village of Saint Aubin , which is opposite Saint Helier in the Bay of St. Aubin, used to be just a fishing port. Today it is - next to it - the administrative seat of the municipality with the Parish Hall (community hall) in the former train station and it is the starting point for a variety of sporting activities.

Saint Aubin with its port has historically been the main population center of the municipality, but the development of housing in the Vingtaine des Quennevais part of the municipality (so-called Red Houses ) has meanwhile relocated it there.

politics

The municipality is divided into four parts ( vingtaines ):

St. Brélade forms two electoral districts.

  • the St. Brélade No. 2 district (these are the Vingtaines des Quennevais and de la Moye) elect two delegates.

All parishes in Jersey, including Saint Brélade, have an honorary police force made up of volunteer members who have certain rights organized in a police-like manner.

The Jersey prison is located in Vingtaine de la Moye .

The parish has several churches

  • From the parish church of St. Brélade ( Parish church of St. Brélade ) it is assumed that it was built on one of the oldest Christian sites of St. Brélade, and has about 1000 years history in their basic components. The Anglican Church has a parish of about 12,500 people and an additional tens of thousands of visitors per year.
  • Next to her is the small fishing Chapel ( Fisherman's Chapel - La Chapelle des Pêcheurs ). According to tradition in folklore , the place should go back to Saint Brélade himself, who had determined this place. It is close to an earlier prehistoric site (dolmen), the custom of which was transferred to the chapel during the Christianization. It is characterized by preserved medieval frescoes , which also survived the Reformation iconoclasm .
  • The church of St. Aubin on the Hill in the village of Saint Aubin is dedicated to Saint Aubin of Angers : it dates back to the 19th century and is an outstanding example of Victorian Gothic . The glass stone windows were created by locally known artists HT Bosdet and one of them by Edward Burne-Jones.
