history

Little information is available about the history of Sainte-Colombe. Two Roman roads - the Via Agrippa from Saintes ( Mediolanum Santonum ) to Clermont ( Augustonemetum ) or Lyon ( Lugdunum ) and another road that connected Angoulême ( Ecolisma ) and Bourges ( Avaricum ) - passed not far from the town. As the Romanesque church proves, the place was inhabited since the Middle Ages.

Attractions

Sainte-Colombe Church
  • The single-nave Romanesque church of Sainte-Colombe is dedicated to St. Kolumba von Sens - a saint very popular in Western Europe in the Middle Ages. The church construction dates mainly from the late 12th century and is one of the most beautiful in the Charente: The first four bays of the outer wall of the nave are made of well-hewn stones and structured by high blind arcades with small window openings. On the eastern yoke, however, this dividing element is missing: the outer wall is not articulated - as is that of the apse ; this - together with the significantly poorer hewn stone material - points to an earlier construction period of the east part of the church. The west facade is comparatively richly structured by four buttresses and a multi-tiered archivolt portal ; In the upper part, figurative architectural decorations ( evangelist symbols etc.) can be seen - in the west window even the set columns are replaced by two very elongated figures of St. Kolumba and St. Peter (or St. Augustine, the companion of St. Kolumba). Above this, a figural console frieze (one console shows a penis) covers both the facade and the first four bays of the church building; the west facade ends in a two-arched bell gable . The church building was added to the list of Monuments historiques in 1973.
  • All that remains of the Château de Sainte-Colombe is a mighty square tower, which is accompanied by a small round tower with an internal spiral staircase ( vis ). The tower closes at the top with surrounding machiculis and a - formerly probably not roofed - parapet platform.
