Salicylic acid 2-hydroxyethyl ester is the hydroxyethyl ester of salicylic acid . It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug and analgesic that is usually administered for percutaneous absorption in the form of an ointment or gel.

effect

The compound is the esterification product of salicylic acid with ethylene glycol . The pharmacological activity can be traced back to the salicylic acid residue. The mechanism of action consists in the inhibition of cyclooxygenase , an enzyme that plays a central role in triggering inflammation. As far as is known, the ethylene glycol contributes nothing to the pharmacological activity of the 2-hydroxyethyl salicylate.

It is excreted via the kidneys with the urine .

application

It is mainly used for rheumatic complaints, closed injuries, diseases of the spine, back pain, shoulder-arm pain, muscle tension, lumbago , neuralgia of the sciatic nerve , tendonitis , periostitis or bursitis . Contraindications are glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, extensive skin inflammation, eczema and psoriasis. In addition, extensive long-term treatment of pregnant women, babies, toddlers and patients with previously damaged kidneys should be avoided.
