The verbena sage ( Salvia verbenaca ) is a plant from the genus sage ( Salvia ) in the family of Labiatae (Lamiaceae). The species is very rich in shape.

Vegetative characteristics

The verbena sage is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 80 centimeters. It is only more or less hairy on the top . The stem is erect and simple or branched. The leaves are dirty green and wrinkled on top. The lower leaves are arranged in a basal rosette , long-stalked, oblong to ovate, more or less lobed to pinnate , roughly notched and measure 5 to 10 × 2 to 4 centimeters. The stem leaves are opposite and more or less sessile.

Generative characteristics

The loose or dense, often branched, terminal and spiky inflorescence consists of four to ten-flowered pseudo whorls . The bracts are green, egg-shaped, pointed and have a length of 6 millimeters. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The calyx is hairy white and 8 to 10 millimeters long. The crown is two-lipped, violet, rarely bluish or pink in color and has a length of 6 to 15 millimeters. Sometimes it stays closed. The upper lip is more or less straight and hairy on the outside. The lower lip is three-lobed. There are two stamens .

The flowering time is all year round.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 42, 54, 59, 60 or 64.

In addition to flowers that are pollinated by bumblebees , verbena sage forms smaller flowers in autumn that regularly pollinate themselves.

Occurrence

The verbena sage is widespread in Macaronesia, in the Mediterranean region to the Caucasus and in Western Europe. It occurs very rarely at the southern foot of the Alps . It is a neophyte in Central Europe as well as in North and South America.

Verbena sage occurs in dry meadows and on fallow land . It thrives best on dry, rocky, loose, clay soils and in warm climates .
