Samson and the white slaves (original title: Sansone contro i pirati ) is an adventure film with mythological elements that Tanio Boccia directed in 1963. The film, which was largely rejected by the critics, was released in German cinemas on July 30, 1965. Title in the GDR was Rebellion on Devil's Island .

action

The wild pirate Murad and his crew plunder all Spanish ships that come in front of his bow and kill their crew with the exception of the girls who the pirates take with them. Only one of the young women, Amanda, escapes and is rescued by Samson, who then decides to put the pirates in their place, which he succeeds due to his superhuman strength after a long battle.

criticism

The film service was critical of Samson's going it alone, who "defeated an entire ship's crew alone, played the iron gates of the prison unhinged, fought to the death with a cardboard crocodile [...] and brought down the pirate chief's palace". The lexicon of fantasy films states that Samson "has apparently once again strayed across time without the cunning author [...] being able to provide the astonished audience with a logical explanation". Even the Protestant film observer doesn't think much of the film. He describes it as a “monumental garment from Italy” and draws the conclusion that it is “made naive and mostly boring”.

The local critics also considered the work to be "written without originality, told without imagination and played and staged without any impressions".
